My assemblyman and congressman duck me -- and use 1960s-era excuses

A few months back, I called Congressman Brian Bilbray for some reason or other related to my Union-Tribune duties, and I got strung along for days with excuses that the Carlsbard Republican -- whose congressional district includes the San Diego...

• Intel has plans to invest during the down-turn. They'll be retooling some of their facilities for the next generation of chips.

• Supervisors from across the state will be lobbying for a budget in Sacramento. Perhaps some of them can convince a few Republicans.  If they did, it would be a greater contribution than Arnold Schwarzenegger has made to the process.

• And some leaders are heading to Washington. The Mayors of San Jose, San Diego, and LA will be pushing for aid to their cities in the stimulus package.  Perhaps Mayor Sanders could prevail upon Brian Bilbray to vote yes for once?

• There's a very good investigative series going on by former UK Independent writer Andrew Gumbel at a new site called The Wrap.

Campaign News!

Aren't you excited that, with nearly two years until the next election, here I am offering campaign news?

Except there are two significant developments today in California of which you should be aware.

First, Jerry Brown is throwing his hat in the ring to be California's governor for a second time.  He hasn't formally announced, but this interview signals that he will.

It was 1974 when Jerry Brown ran for governor as a dashing 36-year-old reformer, the embodiment of change in Watergate's aftermath.

"I was the new spirit," Brown recalled. "That was my slogan."

No one would mistake Brown for a new spirit today. At 70, he occupies a prime spot among the elders of California politics.

Escondido attorney forms exploratory committee for CA-50 run in 2010

Democrat Tracy Emblem, a lawyer from Escondido, is forming an exploratory committee aimed at testing the waters for a run at U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray's (R-Carlsbad) seat in 2010.

CA-50 too close to call

As of 3 a.m. Wednesday, the race for the 50th Congressional District is still too close to call.

With about 64 percent of precincts reporting, U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) is leading Democratic candidate and San Diego-area attorney Nick Leibham by less than 4 percent. Still, Bilbray's campaign was confident of their chances to pull out the victory.

Campaigns expect huge turnout in CA-50

With clouds giving way to sunshine, the campaigns in California's 50th Congressional District are expecting huge turnout throughout the San Diego suburbs.

Kurt Bardella, campaign manager for Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad), said the campaign isn't counting on any particular part of the district to carry them to victory.

"We want votes throughout the 50th," Bardella said.

Democratic gains and strong candidates make for surprisingly competitive races in CA-45, CA-46 and CA-50

HUNTINGTON BEACH - The biggest surprise of this election might just come from Southern California, where many long-time incumbents are now facing their first serious challengers in years due to a combination of Democratic gains in voter registration, an unusually strong field of candidates and a nationally toxic environment for Republicans.

In particular, Democratic challengers in the 45th, 46th and 50th Congressional Districts have given U.S. Reps. Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) and Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) a run for their money.

Republicans ahead in CA-50 early voting

The latest early voting numbers from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters show registered Republicans outpacing Democrats in the 50th Congressional District by 11 percent of all early voters.

Bilbray stays positive on the air

While his opponent, Democrat Nick Leibham, airs ads telling U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) that he "should be ashamed," the incumbent congressman has kept positive on TV with an ad highlighting his reformer credentials.

"Brian Bilbray has been a leading voice for ending our dependence on foreign oil and creating clean, alternative energy," a narrator says, "even before it was cool."

The narrator also emphasizes that "Bilbray went to Washington to end the culture of secrecy and corruption."
