How did Migden avoid a DUI for her 'wild ride'? A look at CHP reports and explanations -- and an outsider's take

Goaded by an e-mailer, the recent news that the state was paying $335,000 to settle a lawsuit over what the San Francisco Chronicle calls "Carole Migden's infamous wild ride" led me to poke around into the May 18, 2007, incident...

Schwarzenegger reappoints former scheduler, bodybuilding friend

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has reappointed his former scheduler to a six-figure state Integrated Waste Management Board position despite his desire to eliminate the panel, his office announced Friday.

Margo Reid Brown, 45, will earn $132,179 for sitting on the waste board, where she has served as chairwoman since 2006. Brown was Schwarzenegger's scheduling director from 2004 to 2006.

The Legislature and Schwarzenegger have appointed termed-out legislators Carole Migden, Sheila Kuehl and John Laird in the past three months to waste board positions paying identical six-figure salaries. Schwarzenegger has called for the board's elimination, which his office estimates would save $2 million to $3 million in garbage and recycling fees that pay for its budget.

Schwarzenegger taps sixth ex-legislator for six-figure post

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed yet another termed-out lawmaker to a six-figure post in state government, his sixth such appointment in recent months.

The latest appointee, former GOP Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, will earn $128,109 as a member of the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, which meets once a month.

The Schwarzenegger appointments -- whose cumulative salaries total more than three-quarters of a million dollars annually -- have come as the state is battling record-setting deficits.

Last week, the Legislature adopted a Schwarzenegger-backed budget plan that contained a wide array of tax hikes and spending cuts in education, health and many other state services.

The Schwarzenegger administration defends the ex-lawmaker appointees as all qualified for the job.

SAN FRANCISCO - From many perspectives, Mark Leno has been breaking barriers through much of his political life.

Leno, 57, started out in politics as a gay rights and community activist. He has served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and just completed three successful terms in the California Assembly, representing AD-13.

In the spring of this year Leno took the unusual step of taking on and beating incumbent state Senator Carole Migden and former state legislator Joe Nation for control of Migden's SD-03 seat, representing the heart of San Francisco.
