CA-48: Could Beth Krom Beat John Galt?

Last week, OC Progressive (which has really attracted a good group of writers and provided a vital progressive voice in Orange County) revealed that Beth Krom, an Irvine City Councilwoman, is considering a run against Rep. John Campbell.  In a subsequent post, Joe Shaw explained why Krom would make a worthy challenger.
She can win elections.
Beth Krom has won five campaigns, In 2006, she garnered 60% of the vote in her re-election as Mayor and in 2008, won her current City Council seat with 8000 votes more than the next candidate.

She gets things done.
We need elected officials who have experience getting things done for their constituents.

Campaign News!

Aren't you excited that, with nearly two years until the next election, here I am offering campaign news?

Except there are two significant developments today in California of which you should be aware.

First, Jerry Brown is throwing his hat in the ring to be California's governor for a second time.  He hasn't formally announced, but this interview signals that he will.

It was 1974 when Jerry Brown ran for governor as a dashing 36-year-old reformer, the embodiment of change in Watergate's aftermath.

"I was the new spirit," Brown recalled. "That was my slogan."

No one would mistake Brown for a new spirit today. At 70, he occupies a prime spot among the elders of California politics.

Brown concedes CA-04 race to McClintock

Democrat Charlie Brown has conceded defeat in the 4th Congressional District race against Republican Tom McClintock.

In a letter to supporters, Brown said that the margin of victory for McClintock, about 1,800 votes out of more than 370,000 tallied, was too much to overcome, suggesting that he'd decided against asking for a recount.

With most votes in, McClintock repeats claim of congressional seat win

ROSEVILLE - Though there's been neither a concession from his opponent or an official certification from elections officials, Republican Tom McClintock again declared victory Monday in the 4th Congressional District race.

Meanwhile, the campaign for opponent Charlie Brown said they're still studying their options. McClintock's camp has claimed the vote margin is too large for Brown to make up with what's left, and McClintock informally claimed victory over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

McClintock to speak Monday, informally claims CA-04 win

State Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) informally claimed victory in his congressional race this week, and said he will address the media Monday afternoon at his Roseville campaign headquarters to make a more formal announcement.

McClintock, who would move from his Southern California base to represent the 4th Congressional District, said in an informal e-mail message to supporters that he believed both that he had won the race and that the margin was too large for a recount to make a difference.

SPECIAL HOLIDAY REPORT: Vote recount could be next in McClintock/Brown race

When vote totals are certified next week in the 4th Congressional District race, it might not be the end, but just the end of the beginning.

The campaigns for both Democrat Charlie Brown and Republican Tom McClintock are prepared in case the county-certified vote total draws a corresponding legal action that could take weeks to resolve.

By state elections law, counties have to finish their vote counting by Dec. 2, and formally submit it to the California Secretary of State's office by Dec. 9.

The SOS's office then must certify the vote by Dec. 13.

Huber takes lead in AD-10, McClintock lead grows in CA-04

Democrat Alyson Huber took the lead for the first time Tuesday in the 10th Assembly District race, up by 531 votes over Republican Jack Sieglock as of 7:06 p.m.

That gave her a percentage of 46.7 percent to 46.4 percent for Sieglock. Provisional ballots in Sacramento County, where Huber is from, apparently changed the calculus in the race.

It was unclear Tuesday how many votes remained to be counted in Sacramento or San Joaquin County, home to Sieglock's base in Lodi.

SPECIAL HOLIDAY REPORT: Dreaded provisional ballots help some candidates pull victory from the jaws of defeat in squeakers

By late November, the nervous energy of Election Night ballot watching has settled into something much more deliberate, slow and lengthy.

Provisional ballots can be blamed, or credited, depending on whether your candidate still hopes to pull victory from the jaws of defeat.

In outstanding races around California, provisional ballots - those cast without elections officials or the voters themselves sure if they'll count - are the bulk of what's left to be counted.

McClintock lead slightly less, Sieglock also still ahead

Tom McClintock's lead in the 4th Congressional District race was at 1,566 votes Monday evening, with a handful of provisional and vote-by-mail ballots to be counted.

The total as of 4:46 p.m. gave him 50.3 percent of the vote to 49.7 percent for Democrat Charlie Brown, and vote count totals were final in Nevada and Placer counties.
