California: Dan Walters

If there are 12 stops from S.F. to Anaheim, it's not "high-speed" rail. It's .... rail.

I was happy to see Dan Walters go after the utter farce that is the California high-speed rail project: ... skepticism is especially warranted now that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other promoters, having persuaded voters to pass a $9.95 billion...

The sacred cow got its bribe -- but gov won two huge concessions

You can reach Sacred Cow at 1705 Murchison Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010. All my past whining about Arnold should give me a little credibility here: In some ways, I don't think Dan Walters gives this budget its due. I...

How taxes are spent must be part of are-taxes-adequate debate

Dan Walters' column today is neutral on the are-state-taxes-adequate question, or, as he frames it, are .. Californians taxed too little, taxed too much or taxed about right He concludes ... There are lots of numbers but no easy answers....

Dan Walters: Prop 13 not the devil. Me: Not all establishment media in tank.

I disagree with Dan Walters about a few things, but he is just about the only prominent member of the Sacramento press corps to regularly go hard against its groupthink. After Arnold's re-election in November 2006, when the media were...

No 'flashpoint' needed to trigger tax revolt. It's already under way.

Dan Walters has a sharp column today about how Democrats in the Legislature are dealing with the messages of the May 19 special election in their new tax-hike schemes. Dan concludes with this passage; As Democrats were unveiling their new...

Circling the drain

The LAT's election team reports on the governor's last-ditch effort to convince voters to vote Yes tomorrow . " Battling anger and indifference on the part of California voters, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger implored them Sunday not to make the state "the poster child for dysfunction" by defeating a host of measures on Tuesday's ballot that seek to restructure the state's bleak finances.

"The governor's visits to three African American churches in Los Angeles came as proponents and opponents of the ballot measures marshaled the last of the millions of dollars they have collected for the special election. Schwarzenegger said Sunday he had been told that about 25% of voters are expected to show up, a paltry percentage that underscores the difficulty of the quest for reliable voters.

Coming budget meltdown: Two ideas that may someday be seen as common sense

Both the Calbuzz blog and Dan Walters have interesting pieces today about what happens if the props fail on May 19. Both are right about the immense pressure the props' failure would put on Sacramento to find more budget cuts....

Where Are The Spending Cut Calculators?

In both the Friday and Saturday editions of the Los Angeles Times, right on page A1 above the fold, there was a graphic of a "tax calculator," which projected the additional taxes an individual would pay based on certain factors like income, number of dependents and values of vehicles.  They have a corresponding tax calculator on their website where users can type in the data and get the precise tax hit coming to them.  The Sacramento Bee has the same thing.  Talk radio was having a field day with these calculators over the past couple days, getting people to call in and disclose their statistics and telling them how much money they will owe.

The Abyss

Just a thought or two on this whole mess while we wait for the Senate to reconvene.  While I didn't think it was the best strategy to announce a deal and start voting on it before there was an actual deal in place (although the rumor that Dave Cox reneged on a handshake deal changes my perspective a bit), Darrell Steinberg seems to have backed into a strategy of playing Yacht Party obstruction out very publicly, so that the essential insanity of their anti-tax, sink-the-state agenda can be well-described by what's left of political state media.  So George Skelton does the math and refutes the Yacht Party assertion that cutting spending alone can solve the budget crisis, and

Budget package stalls one vote shy

California's massive $40 billion-plus budget plan stalled in the state Senate early Sunday morning, as it became clear the three needed Republicans in the upper house were unready to support the plan.

In a preliminary roll call on Saturday night, Senate GOP leader Dave Cogdill was the only Republican to cast an "aye" vote on a key piece of the budget puzzle. Sen. Roy Ashburn, R-Bakersfield, abstained, while every other Republican senator opposed the budget bill. Ashburn is expected to support the budget plan once a third GOP vote emerges.

Sen. Dave Cox of Fair Oaks, widely viewed as a potential third vote in the Senate, voted no.
