CA-48: Could Beth Krom Beat John Galt?

Last week, OC Progressive (which has really attracted a good group of writers and provided a vital progressive voice in Orange County) revealed that Beth Krom, an Irvine City Councilwoman, is considering a run against Rep. John Campbell.  In a subsequent post, Joe Shaw explained why Krom would make a worthy challenger.
She can win elections.
Beth Krom has won five campaigns, In 2006, she garnered 60% of the vote in her re-election as Mayor and in 2008, won her current City Council seat with 8000 votes more than the next candidate.

She gets things done.
We need elected officials who have experience getting things done for their constituents.

The Water Crisis Isn't Over

Recent storms have eased our water worries to a degree - the state Department of Water Resources reports that the Sierra snowpack is at 80% of normal. But because of the dry winters of 2007 and 2008, California still needs much more precipitation:
Elissa Lynn, a meteorologist for the Department of Water Resources, said the water content in the snow would have to be between 120 to 130 percent of normal by April 1 to replenish the state's reservoirs, the largest of which are less than half full. "That's just the snowpack," Lynn said. "We need to have rainfall in the mountains continuing through the spring, contributing to the total water supply.

Your last word in what's happenin' (apologies to Raj and Rerun):

• Here's George Skelton having some fun and making up statistics to scapegoat immigrants, failing to mention the economic activity they produce and the Social Security payroll taxes they pay but never collect.  It's simply wrong to pander to xenophobes the way Skelton does in this piece, under the guise of "being honest."  If you want to be honest, explain that, as baby boomers age, the fiscal impact of younger workers in the country is positive, at least so says that left-wing rag the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and countless other studies.

Campaign News!

Aren't you excited that, with nearly two years until the next election, here I am offering campaign news?

Except there are two significant developments today in California of which you should be aware.

First, Jerry Brown is throwing his hat in the ring to be California's governor for a second time.  He hasn't formally announced, but this interview signals that he will.

It was 1974 when Jerry Brown ran for governor as a dashing 36-year-old reformer, the embodiment of change in Watergate's aftermath.

"I was the new spirit," Brown recalled. "That was my slogan."

No one would mistake Brown for a new spirit today. At 70, he occupies a prime spot among the elders of California politics.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, the nine-term incumbent is beating Democratic candidate and Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook, 53 percent to 43 percent.

If the margin holds, it will be the closest election of Rohrabacher's congressional career.

Democratic gains and strong candidates make for surprisingly competitive races in CA-45, CA-46 and CA-50

HUNTINGTON BEACH - The biggest surprise of this election might just come from Southern California, where many long-time incumbents are now facing their first serious challengers in years due to a combination of Democratic gains in voter registration, an unusually strong field of candidates and a nationally toxic environment for Republicans.

In particular, Democratic challengers in the 45th, 46th and 50th Congressional Districts have given U.S. Reps. Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) and Brian Bilbray (R-Carlsbad) a run for their money.

Campaigns spin CA-46 debate

COSTA MESA - The campaigns of U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) and Democratic challenger Debbie Cook provided vastly different perspectives of Tuesday afternoon's heated debate.

Rohrabacher accused Cook of being evasive and "muddying the waters."

"Ms. Cook obfuscated the issues," Rohrabacher said. "She was evasive throughout the debate and neglected to give definitive answers on the biggest issues of our time."
