California: Democratic Party

September 8, 2009 - 02:11 pm

Does Karen Bass really want a water bill? Then how come she has this extremist representing Assembly Dems? Also: Alberto Torrico's pathetic scam.

I have never had much optimism that a water deal can get done because the greens who dominate the Democratic Party simply don't care if the Central Valley goes into an ever deeper depression. I grew a little bit more...

Who knew? Netroot activists can't stand either Brown or Newsom

I was under the impression that Gavin Newsom was in good standing with the DailyKos/Netroots activist Dems who have developed such power in the Democratic Party since 2003. Well, no. At the Netroots Nation gathering now being held in Pittsburgh,...

Another Latino Dem figures out state party's agenda no help to his constituents

Fresno Assemblyman Juan Arambula, who quit the Democratic Party recently to become an independent in frustration over Democratic lawmakers' indifference to the agony of the Central Valley, isn't the only Latino lawmaker who has figured out that state Dems' agenda...

Journos using euphemisms for tax hikes: One more sign of their contempt for public they see as petulant and stupid

Last year, I wrote a post about UC Berkeley linguist George Lakoff, who became a Democratic Party guru a few years back when he wrote essays arguing that the main reason Democrats were then in the doldrums was because they...

Tuesday Could Give us Another 1978 Election

In 1978 we passed Prop. 13, elected lots of Republicans to the legislature, saved homes and set the stage to take back Washington.  May 19, 2009 could be another June, 1978 election--it could be the start of another voter revolt.

Even Democrats have learned from the 1978 lesson.  "Even Democratic activists are keeping the tax hikes on the ballot at arm's length. At the state's Democratic Party convention last month, delegates voted against endorsing several of the initiatives, notwithstanding pressure from party leaders to get in line behind the budget deal. Commentators of all political stripes are mocking the measures as buck-passing frauds."

People are angry, they want to stop the business as usual, tax to cover out of control spending, attitude.

Get angry or get poor.  Vote on Tuesday--vote No on measure.

CYD Endorsement press release

Last week, I posted a brief entry about CYD's endorsements in CDP leadership races.  I received some complaints about it, and I agreed to post CYD's official press release as a clarification of sorts.  It is rather lengthy, so I am posting the full text below the fold.
Santa Barbara, CA- The California Young Democrats (CYD) took official positions on the race for the California Democratic Party's Executive Board:

Chair- John Burton.  A founding member of the San Francisco Young Democrats, John Burton has spent decades in the trenches fighting to put progressive principles into action. A leader on such issues as universal healthcare, college affordability and the living wage, CYD is confident that John Burton will continue to fight for issues young people across the state care most about.

Jack Weiss' 36% showing in L.A. city attorney race surprises political experts

The morning after he was forced into a runoff election for city attorney, City Councilman Jack Weiss said his first-place finish gave him a "flattering feeling."

But outside City Hall, a number of political experts were surprised by Weiss' 36% showing citywide -- given that he began running long before the other candidates, spent $1.7 million and had a nearly 2-to-1 cash advantage over his runoff opponent, Harbor City defense attorney Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich.

"It's a blow -- there's no way around that. He had the most money, the most mailers and definitely the most TV time," said Jaime A. Regalado, executive director of the Edmund G.

DCCC Takes on Mary Bono Mack's hypocrisy on the stimulus

As we sit back and await the results of the Los Angeles Municipal election today, I thought I'd share with you something that came my way from the DCCC.  Like so many other Republicans (here's looking at you, Bobby Jindal) that decried the stimulus as "socialism" or some other such but were more than happy to take the money for their states and districts, Mary Bono Mack (R-CA45) has similarly derided the stimulus package while praising the benefits it will bring to her district no more than a week later:
In a striking example of hypocrisy, Representative Mary Bono Mack voted against the landmark American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act and now is touting a nearly $5 million grant included in the legislation to benefit her district.

Important stuff, Like Measure B, on L.,A. Municipal Ballot

As we draw closer to March 3, I wanted to discuss some of the important things that are on the Los Angeles Municipal ballot.  Obviously, the Mayoral race is getting some attention, but it seems pretty obvious that Antonio will win that one in a cakewalk.  But there's a lot of other stuff going on that I'd like to focus on--like local measures that can make a huge difference, as well as local races that will determine who gets to be the Democratic Party bench in the Los Angeles area.

I'd like to start with Measure B, a measure which, if passed, will end up generating 400MW of solar power within the L.

Arnold the Reformer? Surely You Can't Be Serious.

I will be hosting the morning show on KRXA 540 AM from 8 to 10 this morning and will discuss this and other aspects of California politics

One of the most positive aspects of the Constitutional Convention Summit that was held on Tuesday in Sacramento is that those who put it together, and most of those who spoke on stage, were not Sacramento insiders. Whether it was the Bay Area Council or the Courage Campaign or Common Cause, they were groups that have some power and representation, whether it's the corporate base of the BAC or the mass base of the Courage Campaign.
