California: Don Perata

It was true of Arnold's health 'reform.' Now it's true of Obama's health 'reform.'

In December 2006, I took part in a conference call in which then-Senate President Don Perata's staff laid out his version of health "reform," which was very similar to the legislation Arnold ended up championing. I listened in disbelief as...

Perata lawyer alleges improper conduct in new federal probe

Reporting from Sacramento -- Former state Senate leader Don Perata has requested a probe of whether FBI agents and federal prosecutors in Sacramento are acting improperly in trying to revive a corruption investigation that was dropped by another U.S. attorney's office, his lawyer said Wednesday.

In a letter to the inspector general for the U.S. Justice Department, George O'Connell, an attorney for Perata, accused Acting U.S. Atty. Lawrence G. Brown in Sacramento of "grossly unfair and highly questionable conduct" in taking up an investigation after the U.S. attorney in San Francisco recently declined to file charges after a lengthy investigation.

Perata had agreed to allow that investigation to be extended multiple times past legal deadlines for filing charges.

Has There Ever Been a Bigger Hypocrite than Abel Maldonado?

Well, the deal is done, Abel (and Arnold) gets his open primary measure. But, honestly, it's hard to remember a speech so rife with hypocrisy as Maldo's final speech on the floor this morning, even from a body that is itself riddled with hypocrisy. Some thoughts and a recap of the speech over the flip.
He begins with some material ripped off from the Democrats.  He talks about how children need this budget, how the college students need this budget, yada yada.  All good points, but where was he for the last few weeks?

He moves on to rage against the Republicans, saying that "never thought I would have to defend the people of California from my party, which refuses to see the truth and would rather see the state crumble than address the reality of a fiscal crisis.

The Skinny

It’s not just the Assemblymembers and Senators that get caught in the term-limits shuffle. Increasingly, staff is on the move both inside and outside the Building. Former Leland Yee chief of staff Janelle Beland has taken over as Senate Democratic Caucus Director, replacing Suzanne Wierbinski, who held the job under pro tem Don Perata. Rabinsky has moved to the pro tem’s policy shop. Meanwhile, Perata’s policy hatchet man Michael Miiller is working at the Banking, Finance and Insurance Committee. And longtime Senate Judiciary Committee consultant Gene Wong has also been swallowed into the pro tem vortex. Wong is now chief counsel to the pro tem. Filling his seat at Judish is Saskia Kim, former deputy director of the Senate Office of Research.

Denham's in for 2010 lieutenant governor's race

State Sen. Jeff Denham (R-Merced) formally announced a bid Thursday for lieutenant governor in 2010, and in doing received the endorsement of three other potential competitors for the Republican nomination.

Denham, who is termed out of his 12th Senate District seat in two years, said in a statement released by his campaign that he would focus on improving the state's regulatory environment for businesses, selling properties the state owns needlessly, and curb perks for top officials at the cash-strapped University of California system.

FPPC postpones decision on ‘slush fund’ ballot measure committees

SACRAMENTO - The state Fair Political Practices Commission postponed a decision Thursday that would make it more difficult for politicians to use generic ballot measure committees as less-regulated slush funds for political fundraising.

Bowing to concerns from both concerned election law attorneys and some commissioners, the FPPC voted unanimously to delay adoption of the regulation until its details could be clarified, which would happen before the commission's next meeting in early January.
