Buchanan leading in AD 15 race over Wilson

Democrat Joan Buchanan appeared to have won Assembly District 15 by about 10,000 votes early Wednesday, but there was no official concession yet from the campaign of Republican Abram Wilson.

With 100 percent of the precincts counted, Buchanan had 99,833, or 52.9 percent of the vote, to 89,013, or 47.1 percent, for Wilson.

Matthew Del Carlo, Wilson's campaign manager, expressed hope earlier that the numbers could still move his candidate's way because Contra Costa County, where Wilson is mayor of San Ramon, had yet to be counted.

Prop. 11 supporters, opponents taking wait-and-see posture

Redistricting reform measure Proposition 11 teetered between pass and fail early Wednesday, with 50.9 percent in favor and 49.1 percent opposed, with 78.1 percent of the precincts counted.

Paul Hefner, a spokesman for the anti-11 group Citizens for Accountability, said he was encouraged that early returns showed the measure passing 55-45, then the numbers slowly moved toward more opposition as the night went on.

"I think we just have to watch and see how it turns out," he said.

AD 10 too close to call

A closely watched Assembly race in Northern California looked too close to call on Election Night, with Republican Jack Sieglock leading Democrat Alyson Huber by less than 2,000 votes in AD 10.

Huber had 46 percent to 47.2 percent for Sieglock, with 98.3 percent of the precincts counted Wednesday morning.

Sieglock campaign spokesman Tim Clark said he expected the race to take several days to decide, with both candidates waiting to see how provisional and absentee ballots came out.

Johnson wins mayor's race over Fargo

SACRAMENTO -- As in the presidential race nationally, voters opted for change over experience Tuesday in voting for first-time candidate Kevin Johnson over two-term Mayor Heather Fargo.

Johnson led Fargo 57.1 percent to 42.3 percent with 97 percent of precincts counted early Wednesday, giving an acceptance speech at 11 p.m. before getting an official concession from Fargo.

Supporters of Prop. 7 not optimistic

Supporters for one of two renewable energy propositions Tuesday said early returns didn't look encouraging, with Proposition 7 being opposed by 66.3 percent of the vote.

The measure had 33.7 percent support, with about 28.5 percent of ballots counted.

"We're not calling it yet, but we are lagging," said Steve Hopcraft, a spokesman for Yes on 7.

Proposition 10 opponents claim victory

Less than an hour after polls closed, opponents of alternative energy measure Proposition 10 claimed victory, saying voters had not been fooled by a scheme to enrich billionaire T. Boone Pickens.

"Proposition 10 is the ultimate example of a wealthy special interest abusing the ballot initiative process to enrich itself," said Richard Holober, the No on 10 spokesman and executive director of the Consumer Federation of California.

Barack Obama is the projected winner of California's 55 electoral votes, according to the television networks.

With no precincts reporting, the Democrat was far enough ahead of John McCain in the exit polls for the networks to call the race right as the polls closed.

Durston campaign reaching out to new voters late

Energy was high in the final hours of Bill Durston's uphill push to take the 3rd Congressional District from U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River).

Durston campaign spokesperson Pat McConahay said her election office was besieged by volunteers Tuesday who wanted to make get-out-the-vote calls for the Democrat.

"We're also calling brand-new voters out here, letting them know that they need to support not just Obama, but the local candidate Bill Durston," she said.

Voters not going party-line in AD 15, Wilson campaign says

Campaign workers for Abram Wilson's 15th Assembly District push are encouraged by voters who don't seem predisposed to a strict party line vote, said Wilson campaign manager Matthew Del Carlo Tuesday.

Though there are a number of issues driving voters of all kinds to the polls, he said, some Democratic voters have nonetheless told phone bank operators that they'll cross party lines to vote for Republican Wilson, Del Carlo said.

"I think that's a testament to who Abram Wilson is and how he's worked across the aisle," he said.

Huber campaign likes Election Day position

Alyson Huber's campaign expressed cautious optimism Tuesday about race results in the 10th Assembly District, and a spokesman said Huber's pre-election position was stronger.

"I think I feel good about the amount of folks who have spent time and energy on this campaign," said spokesman Andrew Acosta. "There's a good energy out there."

Acosta said he was unsure whether high turnout would help or hurt Huber against Republican Jack Sieglock, noting that Republicans lead registration in the district by just over 1,000 voters.
