“Republican Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth of Murietta is the new Senate Republican Leader,
having deposed Dave Cogdill in a  late-night coup. Is this a good thing? What does it mean for the budget?"

The only difference between Hollingsworth and a caveman is that the caveman was smarter and better looking.

Bad for Reeps.  It’s pick-off time.

The Republicans just built a bonfire on the Titanic.

Usually I take glee when the Republican Party turns into the Donner Party, but the stakes are far too high in this case. The Senate Republicans are the laughingstock of California politics but, this time, their insistence on putting the parochial political ambitions of 15 over the interests of 37 million is having a devastating impact on our state.

“A budget deal appears to be in the offing: sales tax hike, school cuts, VLF increase, spending cap. Is there reason to think this budget will do the trick, or will it be more smoke and mirrors?”

It’s the best the sausage-making could come up with - and the LAO will, predictably, hate it.

It will pass and average Californias will be broadly hurt by the tax increases.

You couldn’t find more smoke and mirrors at a hookah lounge filled with carnies.

Smoke and mirrors or just a bunch of politicians moving their lips?

This is smoke, mirrors, recalls, and primaries. All the things that make politics fun.

I think it will go a long way to starting to do the trick.

“Wall Street’s verdict on California’s political leadership is in: The state’s credit rating is now the lowest of the 50 states. So what happens now?”

Nothing.

Our credit rating deserves to be the lowest of the 50 states. Schwarzenegger should be ashamed of himself for leading us into a bigger fiscal mess than we were in during 2003, when he promised to clean up Sacramento and make the place fly right. He, like Bush, has presided over a calamitous budget and economic failure that will affect the lives every Californian. If he were a Japanese “leader,” the only honorable thing to do would be to commit hara-kiri.

Perhaps it’s time to stop trying to borrow our way out of this mess and reduce spending!

It doesn’t get better for a long time.

“Regarding the state budget, should lawmakers and the governor wait on a bailout from Congress, or should they do the deed right now?”

Rome is burning.....Waiting on Congress shows a lack of fortitude to make the tough choices. Put the fiddle down and get to work, boys and girls!

Do the deed now. They’re always searching for some reason why they don’t have to make difficult decisions.

Oh, let’s wait a while longer. After all, we’ve come this far by embracing paralysis and lack of courage, why rush into something we might regret?

It would be classic for the do nothing California Legislature to wait around to have the do-nothing Congress save their bacon.

Former governor Davis celebrates, takes high road on current government

SACRAMENTO - Amid a backdrop of huge budget deficits, talk about the car tax, and voter perception of dysfunctional state government, former Gov. Gray Davis was able to celebrate Monday night.

Though current statehouse conditions eerily mirror those that got Davis recalled in 2003 - and replaced with current Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger - the former Democratic state assemblyman, controller, lieutenant governor and governor bypassed an opportunity to criticize current officeholders.

Caught on tape: Newsom and new bride seen chatting with Democratic uber strategist

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom found out the hard way over the weekend that there are no secrets when it comes to the political blogosphere or seemingly out of the way coffee shops.

A surf doggy-blogger/candidate for L.A. mayor named Zuma Dogg caught the mayor and his new bride Jennifer Siebel at a Starbucks in Malibu chatting with a friend.

Zuma Dogg actually approached the trio who were sitting in the coffee joint's patio because Newsom's driver parked the mayor's shiny black SUV on a red-curbed fire lane.
