Unique anti-Prop. 8 protest underway Wednesday

SAN FRANCISCO - While many of the more publicized anti-Prop. 8 protests following the Nov. 4 election have been loud, high-profile street marches and rallies, organizers Wednesday launched a quieter protest against the successful ballot measure which prohibits gay marriage in the state.

All through Wednesday, organizers are calling upon gays, lesbians, and straight allies to call in to their places of work not "sick" but "gay" in what is being billed as the "Day Without a Gay" event.

Poll: Evangelicals and Republicans drove Prop. 8's success at ballot box

SAN FRANCISCO - Evangelical Christians and Republicans teamed together to drive Prop. 8  -- the ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California -- to victory on Nov. 4, a new poll by the Public Policy Institute of California shows.

Majorities of Latinos, voters without a college degree, and those age 55 and older also backed the measure, which passed by a 4-point margin (52 percent ‘yes,' 48 percent ‘no.')

Leno, Ammiano launch bills in support of overturning Prop. 8

SACRAMENTO - On their second day on the job, two San Francisco-based Democratic state lawmakers launched bills in support of overturning Prop. 8, the recently enacted ballot measure that bans gay marriage in California.

On Tuesday, the second day of the 2009-10 legislative session, Sen. Mark Leno and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (both D-San Francisco) launched Senate Resolution 7 and HR 5 in the Assembly.

Q&A with state Sen.-elect Mark Leno

SAN FRANCISCO - From many perspectives, Mark Leno has been breaking barriers through much of his political life.

Leno, 57, started out in politics as a gay rights and community activist. He has served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and just completed three successful terms in the California Assembly, representing AD-13.

In the spring of this year Leno took the unusual step of taking on and beating incumbent state Senator Carole Migden and former state legislator Joe Nation for control of Migden's SD-03 seat, representing the heart of San Francisco.

FPPC agrees to launch investigation into Mormon Church involvement in Prop. 8 campaign

SACRAMENTO - California's Fair Political Practices Commission - the state's political watchdog agency --has launched an investigation into whether the Mormon Church accurately accounted for its role in supporting Prop. 8, the recently enacted ballot measure than bans gay marriage in the state.

The investigation was spurred by a complaint filed two weeks ago by Fred Karger, founder of Californians Against Hate.

State Supreme Court agrees to hear petitions seeking to strike down Prop. 8

SAN FRANCISCO - Justices of the California Supreme Court on Wednesday announced they would agree to hear arguments as to why they should strike down Prop. 8, the recently enacted ballot measure that bans gay marriage in the state.

In their order, the high court said that parties involved must prepare arguments and brief answering these three questions:

--Is Prop. 8 invalid because it constitutes a revision of, rather than an amendment to the California Constitution?

--Does Prop. 8 violate the separation of powers doctrine under the California Constitution?

Prop. 8 lawyer: ‘No one would be able to stop' recall attempt of justices should high court invalidate ballot measure

SAN FRANCISCO -- The threat that one or more state Supreme Court justices could face recall was lodged Wednesday by an attorney representing Prop. 8, the recently enacted ballot measure which bans gay marriage in California.

With all eyes now on the court as it considers whether to hear a number of petitions asking it to invalidate the proposition, Andrew Pugno, an attorney with Prop. 8 told the Los Angeles Times that the court could face the very real possibility of a recall should the justices vote to overturn the measure.

Alameda County supervisors vote to join legal efforts opposing Prop. 8

OAKLAND - Currently last but probably not least, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors joined several Golden State municipal and county governments who are the state Supreme Court to invalidate Prop. 8, the recently enacted ballot measure that bans gay marriage in the state.

The county, which covers most of San Francisco's East Bay area, joins the cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles and the counties of Santa Clara and Los Angeles on Tuesday in opposing the measure which passed Nov. 4 with 52 percent of the vote.

Brown urges California Supreme Court to review constitutionality of Prop. 8 gay marriage ban

SACRAMENTO -- California Attorney General Jerry Brown on Monday urged the state Supreme Court to review the three petitions seeking to invalidate Prop. 8, the recently passed ballot measure which bans gay marriage in California.

"The profound importance of the issues raised by Prop. 8 warrants that this matter be reviewed and promptly resolved by the California Supreme Court." Brown said.
