Anti-11 forces criticize governor's fundraising trip to Florida

Opponents of redistricting measure Proposition 11 raised the specter of another state with well-known screwy elections Wednesday, in criticizing 11 backer Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for going to Florida to raise money for the ballot measure.

A press release from anti-11 group Citizens for Accountability documents that Schwarzenegger raised $590,000 on a tour there late last week, including thousands from major donors to such prominent Republicans as President George W. Bush, Sen. John McCain and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Prop. 11 backers tout endorsements from NAACP, Poizner

Backers of a ballot measure that would reform how political districts are drawn in California picked up two notable endorsements Wednesday, in the form of state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and the NAACP California State Conference.

Democrats in Assembly reject state budget proposal

A Republican state budget proposal was rejected twice in two days by Democrats, with a party line vote in the state Assembly Tuesday turning back another chance for the state to end its 71-day budget stalemate.

On a party-line vote, Assembly Democrats defeated the proposal, which contained more cuts, borrowing from lottery revenues and none of the higher taxes that have marked proposals from Democrats and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican.

New PPIC poll shows sour voter mood, not enough support for Prop. 8

Most California voters are not supporting a proposition that would ban gay marriage, and they're also down on the state's direction as a whole, according to a new poll released by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Only 40 percent of California likely voters support Proposition 8, while 54 percent oppose it, according to the PPIC's new survey on ballot measures and voter sentiment, released before the Labor Day weekend -- the traditional kickoff of fall campaign season.

Nonpartisan group crticizes state budget assumptions

A California budget watchdog group has plenty of skepticism over proposals to borrow against future lottery revenues to solve a $15 billion state budget deficit, but doesn't believe voters will punish legislators in November for whatever deal is reached.

Jean Ross, executive director of the California Budget Report, said in a telephone press conference Tuesday morning that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal for lottery revenues would be a tough sell for voters who want to avoid encumbering the state with more debt.
