Fargo doesn't rule out return to politics as she leaves mayoral seat

As she leaves office this week as Sacramento's mayor in favor of Nov. 4 winner Kevin Johnson, Heather Fargo said she's hasn't made any firm decisions about her future, and hasn't ruled out seeking office again.

Fargo, mayor since 2000 and a Sacramento City Council member since 1989, said she's feeling okay as she and her staff clean out desks and ponder their next move.

She said feels she has a long list of accomplishments that she can point to both within city hall and around the city, California's seventh-largest in population.

Johnson looks to future at swearing-in speech

Kevin Johnson both harkened to his past and set out goals for the future Tuesday night in a speech at his mayoral swearing-in event at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium.

Much of the speech focused on Johnson's plan to address the three issues he said were paramount during his campaign: fostering jobs and economic development, reducing crime and promoting education.

SACRAMENTO -- African-Americans locally have a reason for pride these days beyond the election of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama as the nation's next president.

They can look closer to home for that, by seeing Kevin Johnson's pending anointment as the city's first African-American mayor.

Leaders from that community and experts said Johnson and Obama's campaigns often seemed to mirror each other, particularly in making a theme of reaching out to people tired of politics as usual.

Supporters thank Fargo for work as mayor

SACRAMENTO CITY HALL - Outgoing Mayor Heather Fargo accepted well wishes, hugs and thanks from dozens of supporters Tuesday, as she prepared to leave office at the end of the month in favor of Nov. 4 victor Kevin Johnson.

Fargo, mayor since 2000 and the city's first full-time mayor, allowed others to do most of the speaking for her at a farewell event, saying only that she would make her farewell remarks before a City Council meeting later Tuesday.

Mayor-elect Johnson to host 'Together We Can' event next week

The community that elected Kevin Johnson as the next mayor of Sacramento - and the first who's an African-American - is invited to a "swearing-in" event next Tuesday.

Johnson and others will speak at the "Together We Can" event at Sacramento's historic Memorial Auditorium, which will also host live entertainment and nonprofit groups as part of the celebration.

Johnson and Fargo meet at mayor's office to talk transition

SACRAMENTO - Mayor-elect Kevin Johnson and outgoing Mayor Heather Fargo had their first meeting since the campaign ended last week, with Johnson calling his defeated rival gracious and a formidable opponent.

Johnson, who will be sworn in later this month, said Fargo told him it was important to maintain a good working relationship with both city staff and the eight city council members.

Johnson names mayoral transition leadership team

Sacramento Mayor-elect Kevin Johnson has put together a transition leadership team of city council members and other connected political insiders to help manage his move into his new job later this month.

Johnson, the city's first African-American mayor, named prominent attorney Mark Harris and City Councilwoman Sandy Sheedy to his transition leadership team Monday, along with Amador Bustos, the owner of several Spanish-language radio stations, and Adam Mendelsohn, a public affairs consultant who previously worked with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and others.

Johnson wins mayor's race over Fargo

SACRAMENTO -- As in the presidential race nationally, voters opted for change over experience Tuesday in voting for first-time candidate Kevin Johnson over two-term Mayor Heather Fargo.

Johnson led Fargo 57.1 percent to 42.3 percent with 97 percent of precincts counted early Wednesday, giving an acceptance speech at 11 p.m. before getting an official concession from Fargo.

Fargo warns final results may not come tonight

SACRAMENTO - Though losing in early returns, Mayor Heather Fargo counseled patience and prudence for supporters at her Election Night party.

"The numbers you're seeing a very early, they're absentees only, and not even all the absentees," Fargo told a crowd of about 70 supporters at about 9:30 p.m. "If anyone's feeling discouraged, just knock that off."
