New Registration Numbers Show More Increases For Democrats

The latest report of registration, current up to February 2010, shows that voters have continued to register Democratic in higher numbers even since the general election.  There are now 17.3 million registered voters, 74.4% of all eligible adults, and Democrats have a 2.32 million vote advantage over Republicans.  By the percentages, the state consists of 44.52% Democrats, 31.14% Republicans, and 19.99% decline to state, with smaller parties rounding out the rest of the voters.

2010 is the last year before a new census and new district lines, so the district-level numbers only apply for the next election cycle.  Still, a close reading makes clear where Democrats should be focusing their registration efforts and resources for the next year.

Calling the Roll on the Budget

As the rumors fly about the budget "deal" and whether any Republicans will actually vote for it, it seemed like the best move was to actually call up Republican offices and ask. sean mykael of Bear Flag Blue took the lead on calling the 15 Republican State Senators and we got some...interesting responses.

There were 5 outright "No" responses, from Sam Aanestad (SD-4), George Runner (SD-17), Bob Huff (SD-29), Dennis Hollingsworth (SD-36) and Mark Wyland (SD-38). Robert Dutton (SD-31) is leaning no.

Most responses fell into the "no position, haven't seen any details, but we oppose taxes." This includes Tony Strickland (SD-19) and Mimi Walters (SD-33) but also Jeff Denham (SD-12).

Big Daddy

Hey Big Daddy,
It seems like lobbying is at an all-time high around this place. Do they have too much power?
Signed,
Lois in Lodi

Hey Lois,

My thoughts on the relationship between lobbying and lawmakers are well know: If you can’t eat their food, drink their liquor, etc. etc. etc. But that statement was made in another time and place, back when the Legislature was filled with people who actually did belong.
These days, I’m not so sure the underlying assumption of that quotation holds. And it’s not just because we’ve got more boring tea-totalers in the Legislature than  we used to. There’s no denying that the power of special interests has increased exponentially in this town.

Denham's in for 2010 lieutenant governor's race

State Sen. Jeff Denham (R-Merced) formally announced a bid Thursday for lieutenant governor in 2010, and in doing received the endorsement of three other potential competitors for the Republican nomination.

Denham, who is termed out of his 12th Senate District seat in two years, said in a statement released by his campaign that he would focus on improving the state's regulatory environment for businesses, selling properties the state owns needlessly, and curb perks for top officials at the cash-strapped University of California system.

GOP party insiders share list of up-and-comers

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -California Republicans have uniformly said this week that they're focused for now on helping U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) win the presidency with the state's help.

But that's not to say that the delegation attending this week's Republican National Convention isn't also looking both internally and ahead, for the top up-and-coming party members who could someday be the party's representative in the governor's house or the U.S. Senate.

Stalled budget means special election likely, some GOP delegates to miss convention

A special election in California now appears more likely, after Secretary of State Debra Bowen said the deadline had passed to add any more measures to the Nov. 4 ballot.

The lack of a state budget, which would affect a potential special election ballot, will also keep some state Republicans home from this week's Republican National Convention.

Denham raises $65,000-plus to retire recall campaign debt

An event last week to help state Sen. Jeff Denham (R-Merced) retire debt from an unsuccessful recall campaign raised more than $65,000, according to a spokesman for Denham's anti-recall campaign.

Kevin Spillane said an August 14 fundraiser in Sacramento raised at least that much, with checks from the event still coming in.

"It certainly helps a great deal," Spillane said of whether the amount raised would be enough for Denham to clear his campaign debt completely. "We'll be doing more fundraising to accomplish that."

Denham raising money for campaign debts, spokesman says

State Sen. Jeff Denham will still accept contributions into his anti-recall campaign account from the June 3 primary, but primarily to pay off remaining campaign debts, according to a campaign spokesman.

Denham (R-Merced) has about $300,000 in assets and about $500,000 in remaining expenses, said Kevin Spillane, a spokesman for Friends of Jeff Denham Against the Recall.

The assets/debts ledger should be mostly cleared by the end of July, he said, and the account entirely resolved by the end of the year.
