Denham's in for 2010 lieutenant governor's race

State Sen. Jeff Denham (R-Merced) formally announced a bid Thursday for lieutenant governor in 2010, and in doing received the endorsement of three other potential competitors for the Republican nomination.

Denham, who is termed out of his 12th Senate District seat in two years, said in a statement released by his campaign that he would focus on improving the state's regulatory environment for businesses, selling properties the state owns needlessly, and curb perks for top officials at the cash-strapped University of California system.

GOP legislators name leadership teams

Republican leaders in both chambers announced their leadership teams Monday, with only slight changes from the previous legislative session.

In the state Senate, Republican Leader Dave Cogdill (R-Modesto) named Sen. Sam Aanestad (R-Grass Valley) Vice Chair of the Rules Committee, replacing termed-out Sen. Jim Battin (R-Palm Desert).

Sen. Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad) retained a position as Assistant Leader, and Sen. Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach) stayed on as Caucus Whip. Sen. George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) remained Caucus Chair.

State Senate's GOP Inland Empire/desert primary could center on Corona

The State Senate 37th District covers Riverside County outside the city of Riverside and it is an elongated stretch of outer suburbs, desert, the Palm Springs resort cities and higher altitude geography such as Lake Elsinore. It is solidly Republican and has spawned an interesting upcoming GOP primary fight between onetime neighboring assemblymen.
