CA-10: Ellen Tauscher Headed to the State Dept

One of the big stories that Calitics wasn't able to cover thanks to the server outage yesterday was the news that, as Atrios put it, Ellen Tauscher may will be "raptured" to a post at the State Department:
A California congresswoman with experience in military matters is the Obama administration's choice to be under secretary of state for arms control and international security.

Congressional and administration sources told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher is the administration's pick. The sources requested anonymity because the announcement is not official.

Could this joyous news be true? Could one of the bankers' best friends and leader of the DLC-like New Democrats in the House be taken off our hands by the Obama Administration? We will see - and we will hope.

25 Things About The California Budget

Done for the Facebook reference: I may not get to 25.

1. One bit of schadenfreude in this is that Doug McIntyre of KABC and the comment section of the OC Register are flipping out over the heretics who broke with dogma and voted for tax increases.  McIntyre was particularly incensed about a Sacramento Bee editorial lauding Dave Cogdill as a "hero."  He's not a hero, he's an extortionist, but McIntyre was calling him a guy who "took money out of your pocket to give to someone else."  Typical Yacht Party jihadism.

2. It's very clear to me that this got wrapped up today before the Yacht Party's meeting in Sacramento, just blocks from the Capitol, so the spectacle of the crazies on the lawn demanding that old people eat cat food and public schools use the weeds out back for lunches be averted.

Following vote, Buchanan cuts her pay

Joan Buchanan, one of the four freshman Assembly Democrats would won previously Republican seats, announced she was taking a 10 percent pay cut, after voting for the budget package.

"I cannot, in good conscience, ask others to sacrifice if I am not willing to do the same." she said in a statement.

Sully, Save Us!

As I had the California Channel on mute after the HR 5 committee hearing, I almost missed the moment that Capt. Chesly "Sully" Sullenberger graced our fair capitol.  But thankfully I got my tweets from John Myers heralding the arrival of our savior.
[Schwarzenegger] said California legislators struggling to pass a $42 billion budget-balancing plan that includes $14.4 billion in tax increases could use Sullenberger as an example.

"The Legislature upstairs needs a great hero in the state Capitol," he said.

The governor presented Sullenberger with a black jacket with a state seal on the front, a California flag that had flown over the Capitol and a license plate with the words "California Hero" on it.

Wilson says he'll challenge Buchanan in AD 15 in 2010

San Ramon Mayor Abram Wilson said he'll take another shot at the 15th Assembly District seat in 2010, adding that he was convinced during the fall campaign against Assemblywoman-elect Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) that she won't be a good representative for the district.

Wilson, a Republican, said the message he hears from constituents about tough economic times isn't being heard in Sacramento.

Buchanan hopes to help on state budget

Assemblywoman-elect Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) said she's focusing on putting together her legislative team after winning the hotly contested 15th Assembly District Tuesday.

Buchanan, who said she'd received a concession call from Republican opponent Abram Wilson on Wednesday morning, said the 52.9-47.1 victory could be attributed to a strong campaign in all areas.

"I had a great campaign manager, great fundraising, a great consultant, a great field operation," she said.

Buchanan leading in AD 15 race over Wilson

Democrat Joan Buchanan appeared to have won Assembly District 15 by about 10,000 votes early Wednesday, but there was no official concession yet from the campaign of Republican Abram Wilson.

With 100 percent of the precincts counted, Buchanan had 99,833, or 52.9 percent of the vote, to 89,013, or 47.1 percent, for Wilson.

Matthew Del Carlo, Wilson's campaign manager, expressed hope earlier that the numbers could still move his candidate's way because Contra Costa County, where Wilson is mayor of San Ramon, had yet to be counted.

Voters not going party-line in AD 15, Wilson campaign says

Campaign workers for Abram Wilson's 15th Assembly District push are encouraged by voters who don't seem predisposed to a strict party line vote, said Wilson campaign manager Matthew Del Carlo Tuesday.

Though there are a number of issues driving voters of all kinds to the polls, he said, some Democratic voters have nonetheless told phone bank operators that they'll cross party lines to vote for Republican Wilson, Del Carlo said.

"I think that's a testament to who Abram Wilson is and how he's worked across the aisle," he said.

Buchanan campaign feeling good on Election Day

Optimism was the topic in Assembly District 15 Tuesday morning, as the campaign manager for Democratic candidate Joan Buchanan described final efforts to get supporters to the polls.

"We've got an army of volunteers out walking and talking to people, and we've got phone banks calling people too," said Jeff Gozzo.

Though much of Northern California saw rainy weather over the last few days before the election, Gozzo said that didn't slow any campaign volunteers.

FPPC says IE spending topped $22 million this year

The most recent spate of independent expenditures in state legislative races pushed the total over $10 million for the general election, according to the state's Fair Political Practices Commission.

That's in addition to $12 million spent in the primary election earlier this year. Six races, including three Assembly races in Northern California, each had more than $1 million in independent expenditures this fall.
