PPIC poll finds Obama up big in state, Props. 4 and 11 narrowly leading

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama leads Republican nominee John McCain by a large margin in California, and two of the most high-profile ballot measures are on the tipping point between passing and failing, according to a new survey released late Wednesday by the Public Policy Institute of California.

The ticket of Obama and Joe Biden leads McCain and Sarah Palin by a margin of 56-33 among likely voters, a 13-point gain for the Democratic ticket in the last month.

Biden to make Bay Area fundraising sweep on Saturday

Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, will make what observers think will likely be his last fundraising sweep through the Bay Area this Saturday.

Biden, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's running mate, will first stop for a lunch and VIP reception at the Atherton home of former state Controller and potential 2010 Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Westly. Admission will be $2,500 for lunch and $14,250 for the VIP treatment.

Diverse reactions to VP debate in Orange County

Last night's vice presidential debate went off without a hitch or a headline-grabbing gaffe from either candidate, but local Republicans and Democrats came to different conclusions about their performances.

Melahat Rafiel, executive director of the Orange County Democratic Party, to said that it was a wash. 

"I don't think any particular candidate won or lost," Rafiel said. "I think Palin did a really good job of learning her talking points and talking about Ronald Reagan as much as she could."

PPIC survey shows Obama-Biden have commanding lead in Golden State

SAN FRANCISCO - The Public Policy Institute of California released the results of a poll Wednesday showing that Californians are widely supporting the Democratic presidential ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden this November.

The PPIC survey showed that the Democrats lead the GOP ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin by a commanding 10 percentage points across the Golden State.

But those polled said they are nevertheless going to watch carefully the performance of the candidates during the upcoming presidential debates, the first one being scheduled Friday.

Khachigian wants Palin to tour California

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Former Ronald Reagan speechwriter Ken Khachigian recommended that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin make a tour across eastern and southern parts of California during the fall, because her credentials as a vice presidential nominee would be a good fit for voters in that part of the state.

Khachigian, speaking at a caucus breakfast for the California delegation to the Republican National Convention, said that if nothing else, doing so would force Democrats to spend money in California that they couldn't spend elsewhere.
