What we do here is link to items with the option of pithy commentary.  Good for the reader, good for the writer.  Win-win!

• The Fresno Democratic Central Committee endorsed Chris Finnie for Party Chair, depriving John Burton of one more email crowing about an endorsement that he can send out to his list.  Money quote from an attendee: "If we end up with a horse's head in our bed, it'll be more than we've ever gotten from the CDP in the past."

• Tomorrow will be the final furlough Friday - until the next budget crisis, of course, when the Governor will find this to be a useful tool to screw public employees and the unions who represent them.

CYD Endorsement press release

Last week, I posted a brief entry about CYD's endorsements in CDP leadership races.  I received some complaints about it, and I agreed to post CYD's official press release as a clarification of sorts.  It is rather lengthy, so I am posting the full text below the fold.
Santa Barbara, CA- The California Young Democrats (CYD) took official positions on the race for the California Democratic Party's Executive Board:

Chair- John Burton.  A founding member of the San Francisco Young Democrats, John Burton has spent decades in the trenches fighting to put progressive principles into action. A leader on such issues as universal healthcare, college affordability and the living wage, CYD is confident that John Burton will continue to fight for issues young people across the state care most about.

Jack O'Connell Latest To Throw Down For Majority Vote

State Superintendent for Public Instruction Jack O'Connell discusses the impact of the budget on education today, and it's predictably negative.  After going through the particulars ($7.4 billion cut to Prop. 98 funding, additional flexibility for local control, a repayment measure on the ballot to return $9.8 billion to education under Prop. 98 in the future), he makes a strong announcement:
The painful budget process at our state and local school district level calls out for reform of California's dysfunctional budgeting process. It is time for a sincere and frank conversation about reform. Central to this conversation is the idea of throwing out the two-thirds vote requirement to pass a budget and simply using a majority vote.

25 Things About The California Budget

Done for the Facebook reference: I may not get to 25.

1. One bit of schadenfreude in this is that Doug McIntyre of KABC and the comment section of the OC Register are flipping out over the heretics who broke with dogma and voted for tax increases.  McIntyre was particularly incensed about a Sacramento Bee editorial lauding Dave Cogdill as a "hero."  He's not a hero, he's an extortionist, but McIntyre was calling him a guy who "took money out of your pocket to give to someone else."  Typical Yacht Party jihadism.

2. It's very clear to me that this got wrapped up today before the Yacht Party's meeting in Sacramento, just blocks from the Capitol, so the spectacle of the crazies on the lawn demanding that old people eat cat food and public schools use the weeds out back for lunches be averted.

Letter from John Burton's Former and Present Staff Regarding Harassment Charge

We are offended by the content of a recent anonymous website posting.  The complaint referenced underwent a thorough independent investigation, and it was found that there was no corroborating evidence to the claim of sexual harassment.

We, the undersigned, have worked for John Burton collectively for a period of 180 years.  During that time we never witnessed, or heard of, any sexual harassment by John Burton against any employees or acquaintances, and we’re prepared to testify to that under oath.  This includes staff members Michele Byrnes and Amy Lemley who worked for the Foundation at the time of the complaint.

John may have dropped an “F” Bomb here and there, but throughout our individual and collective careers, he has always shown us respect and gratitude.

Burton Watch Offers Revealing Critiques Of The Man Who Would Be CDP Chair

It's been distressing to see the race for CDP chair turn from an election into a coronation, with John Burton lining up institutional support, muscling out the grassroots and forcing his competition to the sidelines.  Coming off an historic Presidential election, with the demographics squarely on the side of Democrats and a new generation of activists who have boundless ideas to bring a different organizing philosophy to California, the right chairman of the Party could really leverage the energy and activity into something special, to lay the groundwork for a re-imagining of the political structure.  Sadly, the best can be said of Burton is that

Los Angeles County Democratic Party soundly rejects endorsement of John Burton

Endorsements for CDP Executive Offices were considered at last night's Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee meeting.  As expected, the Committee voted to endorse Eric Bauman for Male Vice-Chair by voice vote; the committee did not take up the issue of Female Vice-Chair, as Alex Rooker was not in attendance and could not make it.

The endorsement for Chair, however, was very interesting.  Chris Finnie spoke on behalf of her candidacy, and got quite a loud ovation despite having laryngitis and having practically no voice.  After Finnie's speech, someone made a motion from the floor to endorse John Burton for chair.  That motion was soundly rejected, with only 50 voting for, and more than 90 voting against.

Burton says state Democratic Party must do more to turn more 'red' areas 'blue' - or at least 'purple'

SAN FRANCISCO - Famed state political legend John Burton has begun to detail the kinds of things he plans to do with the state Democratic Party should he be elected its chairman next spring.

Burton said that he would focus on getting the party to provide more assistance to those grassroots efforts working to turn traditionally Republican or conservative counties to more moderate if not outright Democratic counties.

Legislators optimistic as state budget woes loom over swearing-in

STATE CAPITOL - For at least a few hours, Republicans and Democrats alike exchanged well wishes and paused to acknowledge the significance of elected office, with swearing-in ceremonies in both the state Senate and Assembly chambers Monday.

Before the formal swearing in of 24 new Assembly members and 11 new state Senators, family members and friends crowded the chamber floors, while the new and returning politicians made acquaintances with fellows on both sides of the aisle.

John Burton on GOP budget proposals: 'The Republicans are full of crap'

STATE CAPITOL - Former state Senate President Pro Tem and U.S. Rep. John Burton (D-San Francisco) hovered about swearing-in activities Monday, with plenty of thoughts on the ugly fiscal situation newly appointed lawmakers will face.

"They're coming into a very bad situation," said Burton, who was termed out in 2004 and is planning a run for California Democratic Party chair next year. "But I think it's unfair to lay the responsibility for a solution totally on Speaker Bass and Senator Steinberg."
