With U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman's (D-Los Angeles) ascension to the top post on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Californians now have more influence in Congress than ever before, political observers say.

Waxman joins two other Californians atop the congressional power structure: Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez), who chairs the Education and Labor Committee.

Waxman 'honored' to become chair of Energy and Commerce Committee

U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Los Angeles) said he was "honored" to be named the chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee by his Democratic colleagues.

“I am honored by the vote of the Democratic Caucus," Waxman said in a statement. "We are at a unique moment and have an opportunity that comes only once in a generation.  I will work with all parts of our Caucus and across the aisle to deliver the change that the American public expects us to deliver."

Waxman awaits vote on House Energy and Finance Committee chair

House Democrats will soon decide the fate of U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman’s (D-Los Angeles) intraparty power struggle with Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich.) over the latter’s post as chair of the powerful Energy and Finance Committee.

On Wednesday, the Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee will vote on the influential post. The loser can then bring the vote to the full caucus on Thursday by producing a petition signed by 35 House members.
