Garamendi's hilariously self-serving spin on exit from governor's race

The e-mail I got this morning from John Garamendi's political organization pretends the veteran Democrat's decision to run for Congress instead of governor in 2010 is some sort of political masterstroke confirming his high stature in California politics. Here's its...

CA-Gov: Way-Too-Early-Field-Isn't-Even-Set Poll Coverage!

Two polls were actually released today on the 2010 California Governor's race.  The Field Poll did an extensive poll of the race, including favorability ratings, and Lake Research, a Democratic firm, did their own poll which included some head-to-head matchups.

Field's poll included Dianne Feinstein and I don't think the results were all that great for her.  In the primary she polls well under 50%, compared to earlier polls which had her closer to that number.

Dianne Feinstein: 38%
Jerry Brown: 16%
Antonio Villaraigosa: 16%
Gavin Newsom: 10%
John Garamendi: 4%
Steve Westly: 2%
Bill Lockyer: 1%
Jack O'Connell: 1%
Undecided: 12%

Considering she's the most well-known figure in California politics, and that there won't be that many competitors in the final field, that's not a runaway at all.

Big Daddy

Hey Big Daddy,
As a Republican, a real Republican, I can’t wait until 2010. What’s your sense of the Republican gubernatorial field?
--Hopeful in Hanford

Dear Hopeful,

I don’t mean to undermine your very core, given your moniker and all, but I’m not sure I’d get my hopes up if I were you.
I will say this – I admire your spirit. Where else but California can you have a party that is quickly becoming marginalized and regionalized - a party that has lost its grip on the Legislature, most Constitutional offices and, given the events of last weekend, reality – and still think you’ve got a real shot at grabbing the brass ring?

I’m not saying Republicans have no chance in 2010, but it’s going to take some kind of pocketbook to make that happen.

Liveblogging the Constitutional Convention Summit

I'm here in Sacramento this morning for the Constitutional Convention Summit organized by the Bay Area Council. You can see the agenda here. It's unfortunate that the BAC chose to maintain an $89 registration fee, but there will be other events much more open and accessible to the public in the coming weeks and months.

I'll be liveblogging here and twittering at @cruickshank throughout the day.

The main purpose of this Summit is to gauge interest in calling a convention, bringing people together to think through the process of calling one, what issues a convention might consider, and ultimately start to generate support for the idea.

Governor Lays the Smack Down on LG Garamendi's Office

Schwarzenegger has pledged to make an unspecified $600 million in cuts through his line item veto powers.  And boy oh boy did he take out the blue pencil to the Lieutenant Governor's office.

He cut the LG's budget by 62%.

LG. Garamendi issued a statement, and you have to give him credit for using this a teachable moment on structural issues. Of course, he's right about the borrowing being a temporary fix.

"The additional cuts imposed by the governor in his line item vetoes further harm the vulnerable and the ability of the state to thrive in the years ahead. Thousands of hard working, dedicated California citizens will lose there jobs as a result of the budget.

Jack O'Connell Latest To Throw Down For Majority Vote

State Superintendent for Public Instruction Jack O'Connell discusses the impact of the budget on education today, and it's predictably negative.  After going through the particulars ($7.4 billion cut to Prop. 98 funding, additional flexibility for local control, a repayment measure on the ballot to return $9.8 billion to education under Prop. 98 in the future), he makes a strong announcement:
The painful budget process at our state and local school district level calls out for reform of California's dysfunctional budgeting process. It is time for a sincere and frank conversation about reform. Central to this conversation is the idea of throwing out the two-thirds vote requirement to pass a budget and simply using a majority vote.

AM Alert: Budget signing, convention drama

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today will sign the budget package that the Legislature passed early Thursday morning.

Then comes the list of line-item vetoes.

Of course, as Jim Sanders reports in today's Bee, more money woes could be in the state's future as the economy continues to falter.

"If I could tell you what revenues are going to be in May, I would not be making this call from Sacramento -- I'd be making it from Las Vegas," quipped H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for Schwarzenegger's Department of Finance.

I'd bet the under on that.

The real drama of the weekend will be at the California Republican Party's convention, which descends on Sacramento this evening.

Elected Bloviators Out In Force To Bloviate

John Garamendi has become the first gubernatorial candidate on the Democratic side to speak out publicly about the crime perpetrated on the citizens of California by a dysfunctional process.
Lt. Gov Garamendi: I've been listening to what you had to say about Republicans in the Senate and Congress, we have an infection here and it's a Republican infection that's really spreading across this nation. Just what do they propose to do? Shut everything down? They did that with Newt Gingrich. They seem to want to do that in California and we're saying no way. no how. We're gonna build, we're going to go with Obama.
