Legislators optimistic as state budget woes loom over swearing-in

STATE CAPITOL - For at least a few hours, Republicans and Democrats alike exchanged well wishes and paused to acknowledge the significance of elected office, with swearing-in ceremonies in both the state Senate and Assembly chambers Monday.

Before the formal swearing in of 24 new Assembly members and 11 new state Senators, family members and friends crowded the chamber floors, while the new and returning politicians made acquaintances with fellows on both sides of the aisle.

SF political activist Julie Lee sentenced to a year and a day in prison for grant fraud scheme

SACRAMENTO - A well known San Francisco political activist who was convicted on charges of fraud and witness tampering this summer was sentenced this week in federal court to a year and a day in prison.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence Karlton also ordered a sobbing Julie Lee to be fined $5,000 and that she be placed on three years of supervision by federal probation authorities after her release.

Lee, 62, is due to surrender herself Nov. 4.

Lee found guilty in case involving Shelley donations

Democratic party activist and fund-raiser Julie Lee was found guilty Friday on two counts of mail fraud and three counts of witness tampering in connection with campaign funds she solicited for former Secretary of State and Assemblyman Kevin Shelley.

Lee, of San Francisco, was found guilty by a jury in federal court in Sacramento a day after closing arguments.  The jury found her not guilty on two other counts of mail fraud.

Lee case goes to jury

A political corruption case involving former California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley has gone to the jury in federal court in Sacramento.

Julie Lee, a longtime San Francisco political activist and fund-raiser, is on trial over charges that she funneled public dollars for her nonprofit group into campaign donations for Shelley.
