Budget debacle: It's Bill Lockyer's turn to blame the victim (i.e., those idiot voters)

Bill Lockyer, in apparent seriousness, had this to say yesterday, according to the L.A. Times: How about two budgets? One for the liberal coast and another for the more conservative inland regions. "We'll have the budget for the coast that...

L.A. considers privatizing parking

Why does government own parking garages?  Why does it own parking meters--or have parking meters at all.

Chicago has done this, why not Los Angeles, or your town.  Is it in the public interest for government to own private businesses?  That is really what the meters and garages are--a business--a source of jobs and revenues--it is not public safety.

In the 1960's I worked for a political consultant, Hal Dressner, that was looking for a candidate for Attorney General who would run on the Platform that parking meters are unconstitutional.  Since taxpayers already paid for the roads and sidewalks, why should we be forced to pay "rent" on what we already own?

Sell the Coliseum and sell the garages.

Jack Weiss' 36% showing in L.A. city attorney race surprises political experts

The morning after he was forced into a runoff election for city attorney, City Councilman Jack Weiss said his first-place finish gave him a "flattering feeling."

But outside City Hall, a number of political experts were surprised by Weiss' 36% showing citywide -- given that he began running long before the other candidates, spent $1.7 million and had a nearly 2-to-1 cash advantage over his runoff opponent, Harbor City defense attorney Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich.

"It's a blow -- there's no way around that. He had the most money, the most mailers and definitely the most TV time," said Jaime A. Regalado, executive director of the Edmund G.

L.A. solar plan measure continues to trail

The Los Angeles solar energy plan known as Measure B was trailing Wednesday, surprising a coalition of politicians, labor leaders and environmentalists who still hope that uncounted ballots will push it to victory.

Unofficial election results showed 50.3% of voters opposing it and 49.7% favoring it.

But with 46,000 late mail-in and provisional ballots not tallied, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he believed that the measure could secure the simple majority needed to win.

"I can tell you, regardless of what happens, we're moving ahead on our solar initiative," said Villaraigosa, who appeared in a barrage of Measure B television commercials during the campaign's final days.

Koretz, Vahedi lead in 5th City Council District in L.A.

Former state Assemblyman Paul Koretz was battling neighborhood council member David T. Vahedi for the top spot in the contest for the only vacant seat on the Los Angeles City Council, according to early election returns.

In the crowded six-way race to replace Councilman Jack Weiss in the 5th District, Koretz and Vahedi were nearly tied, with the remaining candidates bunched together behind them, early results showed.

The extremely narrow margin left both Vahedi and Koretz on edge.

"I'm in first, but the actual number of votes is so small," said Koretz, who also spent 12 years on the West Hollywood City Council. "It's such an evenly matched race, it's unbelievable, and it still could change."

Slightly further behind were businesswoman Robyn Ritter Simon; nonprofit group director Adeena Bleich, a onetime aide to Weiss; and attorney and businessman Ron Galperin, the early results showed.

A View From The Ground In L.A.

As Dave noted below, estimates put turnout in Los Angeles today at a sad 15%.
Though city officials were skittish about making predictions on voter turnout, Fernando J. Guerra, director of the Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University who is also a lobbyist, said he expected 15% of voters to show up. In the 5th council district, it could jump to as high as 30%, he said, because of the interest in the wide-open council race, the city attorney's race and a school board race there.

The 5th council district is made up of the progressive communities of West LA, the Fairfax district and Westwood (home to UCLA) as well as some not so progressive sections of the San Fernando Valley including Encino and Sherman Oaks.
