CYD endorses: Burton, Rooker, Bauman (and Low), and Bradley

I attended the California Young Democrats Executive Board meeting at UCSB yesterday to participate in and report on their endorsement process for state party offices, and catch up with my YD friends from other areas of the state.  And we got to hear a speech on the federal budget and energy policy from Lois Capps,

Most of the endorsements were no surprise, especially as, in my experience, the CYD Executive Board tends to tack somewhat closely to the party infrastructure--so, to that end, the endorsements of Burton and Bradley were no surprise.  Alex Rooker was the only candidate for female vice-chair that showed at up at the Executive Board meeting, so it was no surprise that she got the endorsement over Alicia Wong.

Drill Now, Stop Later Proposal Torched

The State Lands Commission scuttled a proposed compromise that would have brought new oil drilling to the Santa Barbara coast for the first time in California since 1969, in what is seemingly a victory for environmental and coastal protection advocates.  However, some are arguing that the proposal, which would have mandated closure of 4 additional oil platforms off the coast within 13 years, should have gone through.
But a parade of local officials, residents and environmental activists insisted the plan would have advanced efforts to protect the coast by eventually closing four of the region's 20 platforms.

"For the first time in history, the public and the state will be able to shut down existing oil production," argued Linda Krop, an attorney for the Environmental Defense Center and one of the people behind the proposal.

Golden State pols join dog pile crushing President's veto of Medicare bill

In what amounted to a legislative dog pile on a lame-duck president, a vast majority of Congress today voted to override a veto by President Bush of a proposal to cut services to Medicare patients and to fees paid to practicing Medicare physicians.

In the House, the veto override passed by a vote of 383 to 41. In the Senate, the vote was a bullet-proof 70 to 26.

Many of the Golden State's congressional pols joined in the fun.

Bush's announcement lifting executive ban on OCS oil drilling roundly condemned

Even before President Bush formally delivered his Monday Rose Garden announcement that he will lift the executive ban on outer continental shelf oil drilling, California lawmakers were jumping on the action as a profoundly bad idea.

First out of the gate (naturally) was U.S. Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara:
