Steinberg Tries Shock Doctrine Quick Vote, Doesn't Work

After the Yacht Party putsch, Darrell Steinberg called a vote on the $14.4 billion dollar tax package, and the new leader Dennis Hollingsworth said, "I honestly don't know how the vote is going to turn out."

Well, it didn't turn out.  Cox, Ashburn, Cogdill and even Correa all abstain.  Maldonado votes no.  Not good.  Lois Wolk isn't there because she's sick, so this had no chance of working anyway.  We're in uncharted waters now, unless the lockdown is theatrical and Cox will vote for a newly drafted bill in the morning.

Senate doesn’t feel like celebrating

On Tuesday, Senators received at memo from the Legislative Women’s Caucus announcing the cancelation of the annual “Woman of the Year” festivities, citing “financial hardships.”

Meanwhile, several high level Senate staffers say that Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, has requested the floor ceremonies and other celebrations be kept to a minimum during the budget crisis. The informal policy apparently led to an unusual exchange last week between Steinberg and Sen. Rod Wright, D-Los Angeles, over how the Senate should honor a groundbreaking African-American football player.

The Woman of the Year tradition was started by the Legislative Women’s Caucus in 1987 “as a celebration of remarkable women throughout California,” according to the memo from the office of Caucus vice-chair Senator Lois Wolk, D-Vacaville.

A who's who of Sacramento-area Democratic legislators - and a few hoping to join that group - rallied about 70 volunteers before heading out to walk precincts in one of the races the party thinks it can win.

Buchanan looks to win fundraising contest on ActBlue

Buchanan sent an e-mail to supporters Monday asking for a $5 donation through the website ActBlue. On that site, Buchanan and other Democratic state legislative candidates can count each donation as a "vote" through Oct. 17. The candidate with the most votes by that deadline will receive a $2,500 campaign donation.

Aghazarian campaign attacks Wolk over car she drove

Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) should think more about her own modes of travel before she criticizes others, said the campaign for her state Senate seat opponent Wednesday.

Assemblyman Greg Aghazarian's campaign put out a release noting that when Wolk was first elected to the Assembly in 2002, she drove a Lincoln Town Car - at taxpayer expense - before giving it up after bad press about the car.

Aghazarian's (R-Stockton) campaign pointed out that Wolk traded in a Toyota Camry for the Lincoln, which cost $37,851 and was charged to the State Assembly.

Aghazarian hits back on Wolk's negative commercial

Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) is paying more for her television commercials so that she can avoid a requirement that campaign commercials must feature the face of the candidate who pays for them, according to the campaign of her opponent, Assemblyman Greg Aghazarian.

Normally, campaign commercials are charged at a lesser rate than other types of commercials, a difference Aghazarian's campaign said can be 20 to 50 percent less, depending on the TV station.

But to qualify for the lesser rate, a candidate's face must appear in the commercial at some point.

Aghazarian airs second ad calling for nonpartisan legislature

Greg Aghazarian lets his kids illustrate a Sacramento problem for him in a new ad in his campaign for the 5th State Senate District seat.

The ad features Aghazarian's three sons playing a game called "Legislature" in which one son immediately declares, "It's all about me! It's all about me!" while another puts his fingers in his ears and says, "I can't hear you," and then, "Talk to the hand."
