California: Meg Whitman

Obama's energy secretary vs. clueless Calbuzzers who shill for green fantasy of pain-free AB 32

The entertaining, must-read Calbuzz blog is ripping Meg Whitman for saying AB 32 should be suspended to held the state's economy rebound: It's a classic false choice - that we have to choose between a strong economy and environmental protections...

How GOP candidates' ties to Boxer and Gore ties could haunt them -- in general election

Has Jerry Brown got a secret weapon in next fall's governor's race? Maybe. Eventually the word is going to get out in much broader circles that both Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner have relatively recent histories of supporting two liberal...

Votegate's latest twist: Bee defends itself with some success

The Sac Bee pushes back against Meg Whitman's counteroffensive with some success here. I wrote yesterday that Whitman might be able to spin this into a her-vs.-the-liberal-media kind of thing to her political benefit, at least in the GOP primary....

Why Meg Is Right to Lay Low

Several times a week, I read about how terrible, just terrible it is that Meg Whitman is declining interviews from California reporters, skipping debates, and not behaving like a serious candidate for governor.

Steve Poizner’s campaign has made this almost a daily drumbeat; “If Meg Whitman can't stand up to questions, how can she stand up for California?” read part of a state from Poizner senior advisor Kevin Spillane last week. And over at Calbuzz, Phil Trounstine and Jerry Roberts are “fuming” about Meg’s “ducking serious questions from California political writers for months.”

Expect more of the same today, when her GOP rivals -- Poizner and Tom Campbell--are scheduled to debate the measures on tomorrow’s special election ballot.

I have a bit of advice for the Meg bashers: Take a deep breath. And get a life.

AM Alert: Feinstein, Whitman atop early 2010 poll

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, should she run for governor in 2010, would be sitting pretty, with a 22-point lead in the latest Field Poll.

On the Republican side, Meg Whitman, former eBay CEO, has the early lead with 21 percent support, with 54 percent undecided.

Those numbers are for the hypothetical match-ups 460 days from now. Capitol Alert has the exclusive statistical tabulations.

The Faustian Bargain of Prop 1A

Say what you will about Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Zombie Death Cult - they learn from their mistakes.

In the 2005 special election they made it easy for labor unions and progressives to unite to defeat his proposals. The attacks on unions were like red cloth to a bull, and that enabled a big and broad coalition to come together to deal Arnold a significant defeat.

Arnold never abandoned his goals of breaking the power of his Democratic and progressive enemies. This time he and his Republican allies in the Legislature decided on a different approach - offering unions a Faustian bargain designed to screw them no matter which option they choose,

10.1%

That's California's unemployment rate as of January, a 1.4 percentage point increase (i.e. an enormous leap) over the December numbers, and a big increase over the 6.1% rate as of January 2008.

The Employment Development Department will not release the county-based stats until next week, but based on earlier reports we can assume that the hardest-hit parts of the state are those that happen to be represented by Republicans - the Central Valley, which is suffering from a grapes of wrath kind of economic crisis as well as Sacramento, which is being hit hard by the Republican attack on government. Spending cuts have wide consequences.

Poizner and Whitman ponder ballot measures

Gubernatorial candidates Steve Poizner and Meg Whitman were quick to denounce the state budget plan adopted last week by lawmakers and fellow Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger .

But they were a little slower to decide how they might vote on the six measures now facing voters on the May 19 special election ballot.

At the state GOP convention last weekend, Poizner said he had yet to see the language for the measures, so couldn't take positions. He did say he would "probably" reluctantly support the measure aimed at borrowing $5 billion from future state Lottery proceeds. He said he knows, however, that he will never raise taxes as governor.

AM Alert: The coming ballot fight

The political establishment is already starting to gear up for the budget-centric special election on May 19.

Here are the budget measures that will be on that ballot:

Proposition 1A: Implements a spending cap based on the rate of growth from the last 10 years. If approved, it would extend the length of the taxes approved by the Legislature.

Proposition 1B: Changes the state's education funding law -- Proposition 98 -- for supplemental education payments to local districts due to recent budget cuts.

Proposition 1C: Borrows from future lottery earnings.

Proposition 1D: Takes money from the First 5 Commissions -- aka Proposition 10 funds -- to help balance the budget.
