Obama/Pelosi claims for climate-change bill far more egregious than Bush's Iraq war arguments

So the House has adopted the Waxman-Markey bill on climate change after a week in which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Obama White House dropped the previous main talking point about the bill -- that it was a profoundly...

Back to the drawing board

As everyone licked their wounds, and returned to the state Wednesday, a new Big 5 began talking about the same old problem. Well, with one little twist ... Capitol Weekly reports, "As if the state budget crisis needed to be any more complicated, now the federal government has been dragged into the middle of the state’s ongoing fiscal battles. If you thought the last budget standoff was rough, just wait and see what happens now that the state’s $20 billion budget problem has gone three-dimensional."

"In essence, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger needs permission from the federal government to cut billions of dollars from the state budget. The governor outlined his proposals in a quickly-assembled budget revision last week, complete with deep cuts to education and health and human services.

Speaker Pelosi Needs a Lifeline

While tomorrow’s California general elections are understandably receiving the vast majority of coverage throughout California, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has garnered more than her fair share of the national spotlight in recent weeks. Any time that the highest ranking Member of Congress – and third in the line to be president of the United States – says that the CIA misled her and others in Congress (Washington-speak for lied)…that’s not only newsworthy but will also inspire the news media to dig deeper.

What is known is that Nancy Pelosi, as a member of the House Intelligence Committee and before she became Speaker, received briefings from CIA professional staff, not Bush Administration appointees, as she would lead us to believe, in the 2002-2005 timeframe.

Pelosi: Enforcing Immigration Laws "UnAmerican"

George Orwell was right when he wrote "1984".  Words can mean what you want them to mean, especially if you are government.  To Democrat Nancy Pelosi, enforcing our immigration laws is UnAmerican.

"Who in this country would not want to change a policy of kicking in doors in the middle of the night and sending a parent away from their families?" Pelosi told a mostly Hispanic gathering at St. Anthony's Church in San Francisco.

"It must be stopped....What value system is that? I think it's un-American. I think it's un-American."  So. bank robber, with a wife an kids should be let go?  Yes, according to Pelosi--families should not be divided.

Ellen Tauscher's Insatiable Appetite For More Homeless People

Late last week, Democrats temporarily shelved a bill that would allow bankruptcy judges to modify the terms of mortgages on primary residences (also known as "cram-down").  Moderates who put the hold on this legislation, particularly former Wall Street investor Ellen Tauscher, crowed about it to the media.
This hardly amounts to a breakthrough win for party moderates - or a major concession by the speaker. But it was a consequential moment in the minds of moderate leaders who often find themselves marginalized in a caucus dominated by liberals.

"It shows we have bench strength, and it shows we can flex," said California Rep.

Yay Deal.

So Abel's tears found a floor, and the deal is now done.  It's a terrible, terrible deal.  Let's first focus on what Maldonado got, which is less than meets the eye.

• He got his open primary legislation on the ballot, but not until June 2010.  Arnold was interested in it, and so it was likely to get on that ballot anyway.  This won't help Maldo in 2010, which was probably a condition of the deal.  Considering that it affects Congressional races as well as legislative ones, I expect Nancy Pelosi to go all in trying to defeat and I don't expect it to pass.

As the House prepares to vote on the $789 billion stimulus, the largest spending bill in history, Democrats are releasing details, though there's still no official word on how much money individual states will receive.

The Los Angeles Times says the bill could send $26 billion to California.

Wonks who want to start plowing through the details can go here.

Some House Republicans are complaining about the rush to vote.

On vote-trading: John Wildermuth's epic journalism FAIL

Attention San Francisco Chronicle: the truth called.  They want Page B-6 of yesterday's paper back.

You see, in recent days, the Courage Campaign has come out with a new action asking Attorney General Jerry Brown to investigate Republican lawmakers for potential violations of the California Penal Code regarding vote-trading.

In comes John Wildermuth to save the day, and tell the Courage Campaign that they need to be careful:

You have to be careful what you wish for in politics, and Democrat-friendly groups looking to bash Republican legislators over state budget delays should remember that.

Well, John, a couple of points are in order here.  I would say that the first one is your use of the word "bash.
