California is not alone: Union horror stories from Washington state and New York

Familiar-sounding stories from other states, starting with Washington: After helping Democrats win full control of the legislature in 2002, the state affiliate of the Association of Federal, State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and other unions persuaded lawmakers to lift...

Tax Foundation: California ranks 48th in business climate among 50 states

Overall, New Jersey is worst, followed by New York, followed by the not-so-Golden State. So odd that there is a consensus among just about everybody that looks at all 50 states that California is extremely inhospitable to business, but the...

The New York state example, part two: What would happen here without two-thirds rule on taxes, budget

When I last took a close look at New York state's finances a couple of months back, it was to make the point that it was similar to California in that it was a big, urban state with volatile revenue...

National Journal says California only sixth-most dysfunctional state. But it was worst in most significant category.

The National Journal survey of the six most dysfunctional states is getting a lot of talk in the state blogosphere, thanks to Calbuzz's initial mention of it this morning. Here's the list: 1. New York 2. Nevada 3. Illinois 4....

New York, like California, ponders constitutional convention -- partly to block tax hikes on simple majority vote!

So in California, things are so dysfunctional that self-styled "good government" groups like the Bay Area Council want a constitutional convention, where job no. 1 would be killing the Legislature's two-thirds requirement for raising taxes and adopting a budget. California...

Another instructive tale from New York state legislature: "dozens of bills" spiking pensions

As I detailed here, California and New York are both high-tax, heavily populated states whose legislatures are dominated by lawmakers who are heavily influenced by public employee unions. But because of gerrymandered election districts, incumbent lawmakers never suffer no matter...

Obama Appointee: Shariah Law is OK for United States

Obama has appointed a man who BELIEVES in Shairah Law--to be chief attorney for Hillary Clinton at the Department State, which means he believes in beheadings, stoning for adultery (wonder if Bill Clinton approved of this.  "A New York lawyer, Steven Stein, says Koh in 2007 told the Yale Club of Greenwich that "in an appropriate case, he didn't see any reason why Shariah law would not be applied to govern a case in the United States."

Harold Hoh also believes that Zimbawae law is as important as the laws of South Dakota or California.  "Koh believes laws of places like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka should carry equal weight with the laws of Virginia and South Dakota, and that it's "appropriate for the Supreme Court to construe our Constitution in the light of foreign and international law" in its decisions.

Mythbusters: High Tax Rates Don't Cause Wealth Flight

Last week I took Jerry Brown to task for repeating the right-wing canard that tax increases will cause jobs and the wealthy to flee the state. Here's what he told the Chronicle's Carla Marinucci:
Still, "I would not be advocating new taxes, I'll tell you that," he said. Already, California is "one of the highest tax states around," he said. "So we've got to be competitive. We can't drive all the jobs out and tax the few people who stay."

A similar debate has been playing out in New York State, where progressives have been arguing for higher income taxes on the wealthy to close that state's budget gap.
