As if there wasn't enough happening today...

? Jonathan Singer has a good interview with Gavin Newsom.  In general, Newsom is a very confident, positive guy, but he lets his slip show here:

But the caveat is that unless we have the structural changes, I don't care who your personality is, it's going to be very difficult to navigate out of this. So that's the big difference between Washington, DC and Sacramento. We're going to have to, as well, at the same time address the structural questions, not just promote a different personality as Governor.

Not personality but process, as we said here back in February.

SF Chronicle Actually Losing $70 Million Per Year

Alan Mutter has a tremendous blog about the media.  Alan is a former leader in the industry, high ranking official for several newspapers, he is truly in the know!

He has done an analysis that shows the truth behind the numbers.  First the loses are 45% higher than previously reported.  In other words, the newspaper lied.

"Assuming average annual pay and benefits of $90,000 per each severed employee, the company would save some $20 million by unilaterally eliminating 225 positions. If the company would still be losing $50 million after cutting expenses by $20 million, then its actual losses can be no less than $70 million.

AM Alert: Feinstein, Whitman atop early 2010 poll

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, should she run for governor in 2010, would be sitting pretty, with a 22-point lead in the latest Field Poll.

On the Republican side, Meg Whitman, former eBay CEO, has the early lead with 21 percent support, with 54 percent undecided.

Those numbers are for the hypothetical match-ups 460 days from now. Capitol Alert has the exclusive statistical tabulations.

The GOP primary:

Whitman: 21 percent
Campbell: 18 percent
Poizner: 7 percent
Undecided: 54 percent

The Dem primary:

Feinstein: 38 percent
Brown: 16 percent
Villaraigosa: 16 percent
Newsom: 10 percent
Garamendi: 4 percent

Former Controller Steve Westly, schools chief Jack O'Connell and Treasurer Bill Lockyer weigh in at 2 percent or less.

Newsom, wife expecting first child

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has serious designs on becoming the next California governor. But Newsom, 41, and his wife, actress Jennifer Siebel Newsom, 34, are now focusing on a more immediate development -- starting a family.

Newsom's spokesman, Nathan Ballard, confirmed in a statement today that Newsom and his bride of seven months are expecting their first child.

"We are pleased to confirm that Mayor Gavin Newsom and first lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom are starting a family," Ballard said. "The mayor and the first lady are thrilled to be embarking on this adventure together, and they appreciate your good wishes."

Newsom kicks up gubernatorial road show

Officially, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom isn't yet a gubernatorial candidate. But the rollout of his exploratory bid makes it clear that he is in full campaign mode.

The 41-year-old mayor is already boasting of 25,000 new best friends on Facebook and 50,000 e-mail subscribers. He has attracted a few thousand more to a series of Northern California events over the past three months.

Now he's making eight campaign town hall stops across California over the next six weeks.

"People across this state are sharing their thoughts about the future of California and it is very clear that they are looking for a new way forward," Newsom said in a statement.
