Suit over Obama's citizenship still active while SCOTUS rejects another

The group behind a suit in California Superior Court that questions Barack Obama's eligibility to be president said its push is ongoing, and added that rejection Monday by the U.S. Supreme Court of a similar suit was not of concern.

Tom Hoefling, chairman of the American Independent Party, said in an e-mail that a hearing for the suit, official filed by the party's presidential candidate, Alan Keyes, will be scheduled soon in Sacramento.

Brown concedes CA-04 race to McClintock

Democrat Charlie Brown has conceded defeat in the 4th Congressional District race against Republican Tom McClintock.

In a letter to supporters, Brown said that the margin of victory for McClintock, about 1,800 votes out of more than 370,000 tallied, was too much to overcome, suggesting that he'd decided against asking for a recount.

Experts discuss future use of technology in campaigns, other trends

SACRAMENTO -- The Internet and other new forms of communication played a larger role in political communication during this year's election, but a panel of experts was undecided Wednesday on whether that role will be as prominent in future election cycles.

Speaking at a luncheon for the Sacramento chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators, Mitch Zak of Randle Communications said that though Barack Obama's success in using online resources to both organize and raise funds was extraordinary, it may reflect more on the candidate than the medium.

Fargo doesn't rule out return to politics as she leaves mayoral seat

As she leaves office this week as Sacramento's mayor in favor of Nov. 4 winner Kevin Johnson, Heather Fargo said she's hasn't made any firm decisions about her future, and hasn't ruled out seeking office again.

Fargo, mayor since 2000 and a Sacramento City Council member since 1989, said she's feeling okay as she and her staff clean out desks and ponder their next move.

She said feels she has a long list of accomplishments that she can point to both within city hall and around the city, California's seventh-largest in population.

With most votes in, McClintock repeats claim of congressional seat win

ROSEVILLE - Though there's been neither a concession from his opponent or an official certification from elections officials, Republican Tom McClintock again declared victory Monday in the 4th Congressional District race.

Meanwhile, the campaign for opponent Charlie Brown said they're still studying their options. McClintock's camp has claimed the vote margin is too large for Brown to make up with what's left, and McClintock informally claimed victory over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

New and returning GOP legislators united on taxes, budget

STATE CAPITOL - As they welcomed 11 new GOP Assembly members and three new Republican state Senators Monday, the minority-party members in Sacramento said their position is as firm as ever on how to solve - and not solve - the state's economic woes.

"Our margin is obviously smaller, but that's a difference without a distinction," said Assemblyman Roger Niello (R-Fair Oaks), who was elected to a third term on Nov. 4 and has served as vice chair of the Assembly Budget Committee.

McClintock to speak Monday, informally claims CA-04 win

State Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) informally claimed victory in his congressional race this week, and said he will address the media Monday afternoon at his Roseville campaign headquarters to make a more formal announcement.

McClintock, who would move from his Southern California base to represent the 4th Congressional District, said in an informal e-mail message to supporters that he believed both that he had won the race and that the margin was too large for a recount to make a difference.

SPECIAL HOLIDAY REPORT: Vote recount could be next in McClintock/Brown race

When vote totals are certified next week in the 4th Congressional District race, it might not be the end, but just the end of the beginning.

The campaigns for both Democrat Charlie Brown and Republican Tom McClintock are prepared in case the county-certified vote total draws a corresponding legal action that could take weeks to resolve.

By state elections law, counties have to finish their vote counting by Dec. 2, and formally submit it to the California Secretary of State's office by Dec. 9.

The SOS's office then must certify the vote by Dec. 13.

Huber campaign not celebrating AD-10 win yet

A spokesman for the campaign for Democratic Assembly candidate Alyson Huber said the mood was cautiously optimistic after Huber took the vote-count lead in AD-10 late Tuesday from Republican Jack Sieglock.

"It's been a long process," said spokesman Andrew Acosta. "But I think it's better to be up at this point."

Huber, an attorney from El Dorado Hills, had a 506-vote lead over Lodi businessman and former elected official Sieglock as of 11:33 a.m. Wednesday.
