Whitman names gubernatorial finance team

Silicon Valley billionaire Meg Whitman might not be expected to worry much about the hassles of campaign fundraising in her exploratory bid to become the next governor of California.

But the former eBay CEO, who faces a Republican primary clash with state insurance commissioner and fellow wealthy tech entreprenuer Steve Poizner, is moving quickly to set up a campaign cash raking machine.

Whitman's finance leadership team, announced today, includes Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, Cisco Systems chairman John Chambers and a giant in the weight loss business -- Jenny Craig.

Other notables include Scott McNealy, chairman of Sun Microsystems, Netscape Communications co-founder Marc Andreessen, former Northwest Airlines chairman Gary Wilson and E. Floyd Kvamme, partner emeritus of the Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield and Byers venture capital firm.

Whitman earlier named exploratory campaign co-chairs, including former Gov. Pete Wilson and Reps. Kevin McCarthy and Mary Bono Mack.

Archaeologists Dig Up Woolly Mammoth Fossil In Los Angeles, Republicans Make It Minority Leader

Apparently that elephant is anti-tax too, and he remembers the good old days!

Among their finds, to be formally announced today, is the nearly intact skeleton of a Columbian mammoth -- named Zed by researchers -- a prize discovery because only bits and pieces of mammoths had previously been found in the tar pits.

OK, Dennis Hollingsworth's new name is Zed.

I was just on KPFA's Morning Show with former Assemblyman John Laird, and we'll have audio of that in a bit.  But as we see the Yacht Party spiral ever more into neanderthalism, I want to make a couple points.  First, Zed Hollingsworth is crazy but that's a matter of degree.

The Party of No

At the root of the Republican-induced budget crisis is, of course, taxes. Dave Cox claimed the taxes would "drag down the economy" and Maldonado is trying to save face by claiming Obama is against new taxes. And Tony Strickland had perhaps the most absurd line of the day:
"If we pass this budget," he said, "Los Angeles and San Francisco will become the Detroit(s) of the West."

Don't look now Tony, California's unemployment rate isn't that far behind Michigan's. The destruction of public services you insist upon - gutting food stamps, Medi-Cal, and schools - would drag California into the abyss.

The Yacht Party's opposition to new taxes flies in the face of history.

Ex-Gov. Wilson tops list of early Whitman backers

Former Gov. Pete Wilson tops the list of early endorsers of Meg Whitman's exploratory run for governor.

Wilson, who served two terms as governor, has signed on as her campaign chairman.

Topping the list of her campaign co-chairs is Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who has experienced a meteoric rise in Washington D.C. to become the GOP's chief deputy whip - the No. 3 post in the Republican caucus - after just a single term.

Other co-chairs:

Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark
Rep. Mary Bono-Mack, R-Palm Springs
Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego
Former Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, R-Lancaster

Ex-governors urge Schwarzenegger to save CCC

All of California's living ex-governors -- Jerry Brown, George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson and Gray Davis -- have co-signed a letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger urging him to withdraw his proposal to eliminate the California Conservative Corps, calling it "one state agency that taxpayers should be proud to support."

In the governor's 2009-10 budget, Schwarzenegger has proposed eliminating the CCC, as the agency is known, saving the state $17 million in the current year.

Future savings would be $24 million annually. California faces a roughly $40 billion deficit.

The California Conservative Corps, signed into law by Brown more than three decades ago, hires typically unemployed young men and women (18-25) to work in the outdoors for a year on state projects.

Schwarzenegger, other governors back federal stimulus plan

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and 18 other governors (if you count the Virgin Islands) sent a letter to President Barack Obama supporting the stimulus plan working its way through Congress.

The $800 billion-plus spending package could help California close its roughly $40 billion budget deficit as well as pump money into infrastructure projects in the state.

"We urge the Congress to reach prompt resolution of all outstanding differences and you to sign the bill when it reaches your desk," the bipartisan group of governors write.

Meanwhile, on Monday, three ex-California governors -- George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson, and Gray Davis -- co-wrote an op-ed in the Washington Times with some advice for the Congress and president on how to best put together the stimulus package.

The full letter from Schwarzenegger and the other governors after the jump.

Wilson: My budget situation was different than now

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Former California Governor Pete Wilson said Monday that he also didn't think the current state budget standoff - which kept state GOP legislators and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in California rather than attending the convention - could be fairly compared to what he dealt with in the mid-1990s.

Then, Wilson agreed to a temporary tax increase as a way to fill a state budget deficit, as Democrats have pushed for this year.

Wilson goes after Obama on foreign policy

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Former California Gov. Pete Wilson said he sees this year's presidential election in much the same way as former President Ronald Reagan saw the only acceptable conclusion to the Cold War: "They lose, we win."

Wilson, speaking to the state's delegation to the Republican National Convention, said making sure U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won in November would require legwork and financial support from California, which has the largest delegation in Minneapolis.
