Brown closes to less than 400 votes of McClintock's lead

Democrat Charlie Brown closed to within 329 votes of Republican Tom McClintock Friday in the ongoing ballot count for the 4th Congressional District race.

Brown, from Roseville, was as close to McClintock's lead as he'd been since Election Day, and an e-mail to campaign supporters said that provisional ballots from Nevada County deserved the credit.

Peace pushes for vote on open primary in 2010

California primary elections may help elect Republicans and Democrats, but they're not all that democratic.

That's the estimation of former state Sen. Steve Peace (D-San Diego), who is pushing for an open primary system through a ballot measure voters could decide on in 2010.

The measure was filed with the state in September, then withdrawn in October after receiving public comments. Peace said that he and other members of the California Independent Voter Project will study the comments and make small changes to the measure before submitting it again.

Top pollsters analyze election, debunk political myths

SACRAMENTO - Republicans face a tough future in California, based on results from last Tuesday's election, according to two of the state's most respected pollsters.

Speaking at a press luncheon, Mark Baldassare of the Public Policy Institute of California and Mark DiCamillo of the Field Poll said both polling and Election Day results show a GOP that's disconnected from the three fastest-growing groups of voters: Latinos, decline-to-states and youth.

Backers for Proposition 11 hail victory

Supporters for redistricting reform measure Proposition 11 claimed victory Wednesday, followed by something of a "bah humbug" from the opposition.

With 100 percent of the precincts in, the measure appeared to have passed by a margin of 50.6 percent to 49.4 percent.

At a Los Angeles victory rally, representatives from 11-backing groups such as the state AARP, Common Cause and the League of Women Voters - as well as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger - said the win was a sign voters agreed with the need to reform how political districts are drawn.

Prop. 11 supporters, opponents taking wait-and-see posture

Redistricting reform measure Proposition 11 teetered between pass and fail early Wednesday, with 50.9 percent in favor and 49.1 percent opposed, with 78.1 percent of the precincts counted.

Paul Hefner, a spokesman for the anti-11 group Citizens for Accountability, said he was encouraged that early returns showed the measure passing 55-45, then the numbers slowly moved toward more opposition as the night went on.

"I think we just have to watch and see how it turns out," he said.

Both sides of Prop. 11 hopeful on results

Both sides of redistricting measure Proposition 11 said they felt good Tuesday, with each believing that the sizable numbers of undecided voters - up to a quarter in some polls - will break their way.

Jeannine English, president of the 11-backing state AARP, said poll numbers showed increasing support for the measure in recent months, and noted that the Yes on 11 campaign picked up endorsements within the last week from several prominent Democrats, including state Treasurer Bill Lockyer.

Proposition 11 ads focus on emotion, not nuts and bolts

Commercials for the redistricting reform measure Proposition 11 make reference to holding politicians accountable, note the support of several "good government" groups and point out that politicians, in the generic sense, are opposed to it.

One aspect such commercials don't mention: What the measure actually does.

Prop. 11's supporters say that's entirely by design, and political experts said that's a sound approach, unlikely to change in the few days before Election Day.
