California: Proposition 8

Mormon-bashing gays! Plus, can IOU my taxes?

I gotta tell ya, I don’t really have anything new of substance to say about the larger issue involved in the whole battle over same-sex marriage, the locus of which continues to be California because the state’s highest court will hear the case about whether Proposition 8 can stand. I just keep writing about it because the commentariat keeps making it easy by putting some interesting and some silly -- mostly silly -- stuff out there even though the pundits themselves have relatively little new to say about the larger issue, but seem to feel they have to say it anyway.

Protest against McClintock a no-show

A planned protest outside Tom McClintock's congressional campaign office failed to materialize Friday morning, with no explanation as to why.

Thursday night, the group California Young Democrats sent an e-mail to media that said the group would protest outside the McClintock's Roseville campaign headquarters at 10 a.m. Friday over his comments earlier this week on why he supported Proposition 8.

McClintock campaign: No offense intended on Prop. 8 comment

A spokesman for state Sen. Tom McClintock's (R-Thousand Oaks) congressional campaign said no offense was intended when McClintock used an animal analogy in his reasoning for backing Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage in the state constitution.

"I think that's a hard-fought campaign, and emotions are running high," said spokesman Bill George. "It's just an analogy, not a reflection on anyone's sexuality or choice of civil relationships."

Fargo slams Johnson over slate mailers with pro-Prop. 8 message

NOTE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the person who gave a statement from Kevin Johnson at the No on 8 rally today.

Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo said challenger Kevin Johnson had flip-flopped on gay marriage, criticizing him Tuesday for having his name on two mailers that also urged a vote in favor of Proposition 8.

The mailers, which arrived in Sacramento mailboxes this week, carried a slate of positions on propositions and other ballot decisions mostly paid for by various campaigns, including Johnson's.

Mobley to Galgiani: Where do you stand on Prop. 8?

Assembly candidate Jack Mobley declared his support of Proposition 8 Monday, then called on opponent and incumbent Assembly member Cathleen Galgiani to give her own stance.

Mobley, a Merced County planning commissioner trying to unseat Galgiani (D-Livingston) in the 17th Assembly District, said voters should know what representatives like Galgiani have to say on issues of such interest.

"I agree that there is strength in values; however, it is time to find out what Assemblywoman Galgiani's values are," Mobley said in a press release.

New PPIC poll shows sour voter mood, not enough support for Prop. 8

Most California voters are not supporting a proposition that would ban gay marriage, and they're also down on the state's direction as a whole, according to a new poll released by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Only 40 percent of California likely voters support Proposition 8, while 54 percent oppose it, according to the PPIC's new survey on ballot measures and voter sentiment, released before the Labor Day weekend -- the traditional kickoff of fall campaign season.

Obama stakes out position on California gay marriage ballot initiative

Barack Obama|desc=Getty Images Photo|link=none|align=right|width=200|height=223]Reversing a previous position where he said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the individual states, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama said over the weekend that he would oppose the California ballot proposition seeking a ban against same-sex nuptials.

In a letter read before the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pride Breakfast in San Francisco on Sunday, Obama said he would oppose Prop.
