Tom Campbell: Same Old Hooverism, Same Old Flaws

California's media likes to play up Tom Campbell as some sort of "moderate" or "sensible" Republican. As compared to Attila the Hun this might be plausible. But even a cursory glance at his alternative budget solutions shows that he is a typically conservative politician. Sure, his conservatism seems to be of the Ronald Reagan sort as opposed to the Grover Norquist sort. But there never was much difference between the two, except in tone, which is apparently all that matters to the media.

Campbell's proposed budget claims to want to solve a "systemic" crisis in a way that doesn't hurt our ability to recover from the economic crisis.

Michael Reagan: As a Spending Limit, Prop. 1A Does Not Cut It

In 1973 Governor Ronald Reagan had Prop. 1 on the ballot, to protect citizens from government.  "I think taxpayers are fed up with big government continually digging into their pockets for more and more," Governor Reagan said at the time."

The question is, are we, today, fed up with a government that taxes us out of our jobs and homes?  Are we tired of a government that openly lies about the affects of ballot measures, like the $16 billion tax increase embedded in Prop.1A?

At what point do we revolt against the corruption and special interests of Sacramento?  Will May 19 be the date?  It is up to you.

Orange County Cuts Planned Parenthood

I readily admit that I am old enough to remember the day in 1967 when Ronald Reagan signed a bill as governor of California supporting public funding of abortion for women in poverty.

While in the White House, Reagan assumed the required pro-life positions in order to keep and expand his base on the Christian Right. However, he never had a meeting in the White House with any of the pro-life organizations. They would have to stand outside at the foot of the Washington Monument, often in the rain, while Reagan spoke to them by telephone over a public address system.

LA Times Reinforces Right-Wing Tax Frames

Today's LA Times contains a "news analysis" by Evan Halper that seeks to explain why taxpayers seem to be getting less for their tax dollars. But the most obvious point goes almost totally ignored - that tax cuts have reduced the ability of government to provide for basic services. Since that isn't part of this article, the effect is to mislead readers into thinking government is misusing tax dollars, and thus winds up reinforcing right-wing frames.
Reporting from Sacramento -- Middle-class Californians have long griped about paying more taxes than they might pay elsewhere, but for decades this state could boast that it gave them quite a bit in return.

Ashburn invokes Reagan in advance of Senate vote

Republican Sen. Roy Ashburn of Bakersfield is invoking the memory of the man conservative love to idolize -- Ronald Reagan -- as he prepares to vote for a budget package that includes more than $14 billion in new taxes.

"In 1967, when the state faced a similar budget situation, he proposed the largest tax increase in the history of California," says Ashburn in an AP interview. "I know Ronald Reagan meant it when he said 'limited government and no tax increases,' but politics is politics and governing is governing."

The Party of No

At the root of the Republican-induced budget crisis is, of course, taxes. Dave Cox claimed the taxes would "drag down the economy" and Maldonado is trying to save face by claiming Obama is against new taxes. And Tony Strickland had perhaps the most absurd line of the day:
"If we pass this budget," he said, "Los Angeles and San Francisco will become the Detroit(s) of the West."

Don't look now Tony, California's unemployment rate isn't that far behind Michigan's. The destruction of public services you insist upon - gutting food stamps, Medi-Cal, and schools - would drag California into the abyss.

The Yacht Party's opposition to new taxes flies in the face of history.

VP nominees rarely come from Golden State

For a state that's easily the richest prize of electoral votes in presidential contests, California has rarely been a contender in recent years for selection of a vice presidential candidates.

One has to go back to 1952, when then-U.S. Rep. Richard Nixon was tapped from California to be Dwight D. Eisenhower's vice presidential running mate on the Republican ticket, for the last time a Golden State native was a major party's pick.
