Response roundup: Prison population reduction order

Reactions to court-ordered cuts to the state's prison inmate population started rolling in as soon as a panel of three federal judges issued their ruling yesterday. You can read the 184-page ruling here.

Villines fills out Assembly Republican leadership

Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines (R-Clovis) unveiled his full leadership team Tuesday for the 2008-10 legislative session.

Villines appointed Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo) as Republican floor manager, after he named Assemblyman Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita) as Assembly Republican Caucus Chair last week.

Potential candidate thinks Democrats can pick up AD-33 in 2010

A Democratic attorney said he's exploring the possibility of running in a potentially competitive Central Coast swing seat in 2010.

Jon-Erik Storm, an attorney in Santa Maria who'd be making his first try at legislative office, said he's considering running in the 33rd Assembly District, currently held by Assemblyman San Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo).

Blakeslee aiming at state senate seat in 2012

Central Coast Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee has filed a statement of intent to run in State Senate District 15 in 2012.

The seat is currently held by moderate state Sen. Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Maria), who would be termed out that year.

Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo) was first elected to the Assembly in 2004 and is termed out in two years. He was not immediately available for comment Friday.

Before winning elected office, Blakeslee headed a family business in San Luis Obispo and previously did a stint as a research scientist in Texas for Exxon.
