California: San Francisco Chronicle

Goaded by an e-mailer, the recent news that the state was paying $335,000 to settle a lawsuit over what the San Francisco Chronicle calls "Carole Migden's infamous wild ride" led me to poke around into the May 18, 2007, incident...

Little by little, the San Francisco Chronicle is being closed down.

Yesterday, they fired another 30 employees, many of them reporters.  A couple of years ago Business Week predicted that by Christmas of 2009 both the Sacramento Bee and the Chronicle will be history.

This is just another step in that direction.

Of course, this is a paper that supports higher taxes on its readers, fewer jobs for its readers and prefers regulations that kick businesses to other States.

When will the SF Chronicle go all digital or close totally?

Her is a report on the ten newspapers about to go under or all digital--no longer killing trees.  The interesting note is that the Sacramento Bee, which is going all digital soon, is NOT on the list.

"6. The San Francisco Chronicle. Parent company Hearst has already set a deadline for shutting the paper if it cannot make tremendous cost cuts. The Chronicle lost as much as $70 million last year.  Even if the company could lower its costs, the northern California economy is in bad shape. The online version of the paper could be the only version by the middle of the 2009.
