Bonnie Garcia drops state Senate bid

Former Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, R-Cathedral City, has decided not to seek a seat in the state Senate in two years, according to an interview with the Desert Sun.

"I believe that I already had an opportunity to serve. It's other people's turn," she told her local paper.

Garcia had previously filed paperwork to run for SD 40 in 2010.

The big hint that Garcia wasn't running was her acceptance of an appointment by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. The post pays roughly $128,000 a year -- not the type of thing politicians typically accept if they're planning to seek further office.

Other potential candidates include Assemblywoman Mary Salas, D-Chula Vista, and former Assemblywoman Shirley Horton, R-San Diego.

Democratic Sen. Denise Ducheny, D-San Diego, currently occupies the seat, but is termed out in 2010.

Democrats increase voter registration lead in AD-78

Recent voter registration numbers in the 78th State Assembly District show Democrats increasing their lead over Republicans, a welcome trend for the party as it looks to pick up an open seat and move closer to a two-thirds majority in the chamber.

Registered Democrats now outnumber Republicans in the San Diego County-based district by over 21,000 voters, representing a 3.77 percent increase in the gap since 2006 (see details below).

Legislators ranked by ideology, voting record

Capitol Weekly has released its second annual ranking of ideology among state legislators, based on their votes on bills that have come up over the past year.

Seven Assembly members, all Republicans, got a score of zero on a scale of zero to 100 on how liberal their voting record appeared to be. Four Republican state Senators also received that score.
