Poizner neutral on Adams recall, hints at juicy, as-yet-unrevealed oppo research on rivals

Steve Poizner came by the U-T earlier this afternoon to talk about his gubernatorial campaign. I thought Steve did a good job of making the case that he has a much longer and more impressive history of public service than...

How GOP candidates' ties to Boxer and Gore ties could haunt them -- in general election

Has Jerry Brown got a secret weapon in next fall's governor's race? Maybe. Eventually the word is going to get out in much broader circles that both Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner have relatively recent histories of supporting two liberal...

Tom Campbell as Gray Davis? The parallels between the 1998 Dem primary and the 2010 GOP primary start to firm up

When I first heard Tom Campbell liken the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary to the 1998 Democratic gubernatorial primary, I was pretty intrigued. Campbell is the underdog with the long resume of government service, a la Gray Davis. Steve Poizner and...

California at risk of blowing a once-in-a-generation chance at reform

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner's announcement yesterday that he's going to be a gung-ho supporter of an initiative to make the Legislature part-time is one more profoudingly depressing sign that California is on the brink of blowing a tremendous opportunity...

Why Meg Is Right to Lay Low

Several times a week, I read about how terrible, just terrible it is that Meg Whitman is declining interviews from California reporters, skipping debates, and not behaving like a serious candidate for governor.

Steve Poizner’s campaign has made this almost a daily drumbeat; “If Meg Whitman can't stand up to questions, how can she stand up for California?” read part of a state from Poizner senior advisor Kevin Spillane last week. And over at Calbuzz, Phil Trounstine and Jerry Roberts are “fuming” about Meg’s “ducking serious questions from California political writers for months.”

Expect more of the same today, when her GOP rivals -- Poizner and Tom Campbell--are scheduled to debate the measures on tomorrow’s special election ballot.

I have a bit of advice for the Meg bashers: Take a deep breath. And get a life.

Slow thaw

"A state panel Wednesday moved toward releasing $500 million for school, road and housing projects after it froze bond funds in December due to the budget stalemate," writes Kevin Yamamura in the Bee.

"The state's Pooled Money Investment Board agreed to release the money as soon as April if State Treasurer Bill Lockyer can sell $4 billion in bonds this month.

"The board halted funding in December for thousands of public works projects because the state could not access credit markets as lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger kept the state budget in limbo.

"The state Department of Finance will set criteria for determining which projects will receive the first $500 million in bond funds, possibly focusing on health and safety projects or those in jeopardy of losing federal funding.

CA-Gov: Way-Too-Early-Field-Isn't-Even-Set Poll Coverage!

Two polls were actually released today on the 2010 California Governor's race.  The Field Poll did an extensive poll of the race, including favorability ratings, and Lake Research, a Democratic firm, did their own poll which included some head-to-head matchups.

Field's poll included Dianne Feinstein and I don't think the results were all that great for her.  In the primary she polls well under 50%, compared to earlier polls which had her closer to that number.

Dianne Feinstein: 38%
Jerry Brown: 16%
Antonio Villaraigosa: 16%
Gavin Newsom: 10%
John Garamendi: 4%
Steve Westly: 2%
Bill Lockyer: 1%
Jack O'Connell: 1%
Undecided: 12%

Considering she's the most well-known figure in California politics, and that there won't be that many competitors in the final field, that's not a runaway at all.

Cal's uninsured motorist rate still high

Two decades ago, it was estimated that as many as a third of California's motorists were driving without insurance, but a series of get-tough laws reduced the rate by more than half to 18 percent, according to a new nationwide survey by the Insurance Research Council.

Nevertheless, at 18 percent (in 2007), the IRC still tags California as having the nation's seventh highest rate of uninsured motorists at four-plus percentage points above the national average. New Mexico had the nation's highest rate of uninsured at 29 percent while Massachusetts, at 1 percent, was the lowest.

The IRC believes that the severe national recession will raise the uninsured motorist rate throughout the country from 13.

10.1%

That's California's unemployment rate as of January, a 1.4 percentage point increase (i.e. an enormous leap) over the December numbers, and a big increase over the 6.1% rate as of January 2008.

The Employment Development Department will not release the county-based stats until next week, but based on earlier reports we can assume that the hardest-hit parts of the state are those that happen to be represented by Republicans - the Central Valley, which is suffering from a grapes of wrath kind of economic crisis as well as Sacramento, which is being hit hard by the Republican attack on government. Spending cuts have wide consequences.

Big Daddy

Hey Big Daddy,
As a Republican, a real Republican, I can’t wait until 2010. What’s your sense of the Republican gubernatorial field?
--Hopeful in Hanford

Dear Hopeful,

I don’t mean to undermine your very core, given your moniker and all, but I’m not sure I’d get my hopes up if I were you.
I will say this – I admire your spirit. Where else but California can you have a party that is quickly becoming marginalized and regionalized - a party that has lost its grip on the Legislature, most Constitutional offices and, given the events of last weekend, reality – and still think you’ve got a real shot at grabbing the brass ring?

I’m not saying Republicans have no chance in 2010, but it’s going to take some kind of pocketbook to make that happen.
