Term-limits measure can begin collecting signatures

A proposed ballot measure allowing extended term limits - without facing re-election -- if legislators don't engage in re-election fund-raising or take campaign junkets can now begin collecting signatures.

The California Secretary of State's office released the measure Monday with the state Attorney General office's official title: "LEGISLATORS' TERMS IN OFFICE. CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS AND JUNKETS. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT."

Proposed measure ties term limits to fundraising

Getting money out of state politics is the motivation for a ballot measure Santa Monica accountant Paul McCauley is backing.

McCauley said his measure would give legislators an option: Raise money and go on junkets and comply with existing term limits, or forego such standard practices and stay in office, unopposed, beyond the term limits.

"The only rationale to raise campaign contributions is to keep myself getting re-elected," McCauley said to PolitickerCA.com. "I think a fair number of them would accept this offer."

New term limits measure collecting signatures

A potential ballot measure dealing with term limits, campaign contributions and junkets is now being circulated for signatures, according to the California Secretary of State's office.

The measure would give state Assembly members an additional two years in office, and state Senate members an additional four years - one extra term for each chamber.

But legislators could take advantage of the term limits extension only if they did not receive campaign contributions or join any privately funded junkets, which lobbyists and contributors often pay for legislators to take.
