Tom Campbell as Gray Davis? The parallels between the 1998 Dem primary and the 2010 GOP primary start to firm up

When I first heard Tom Campbell liken the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary to the 1998 Democratic gubernatorial primary, I was pretty intrigued. Campbell is the underdog with the long resume of government service, a la Gray Davis. Steve Poizner and...

Why Meg Is Right to Lay Low

Several times a week, I read about how terrible, just terrible it is that Meg Whitman is declining interviews from California reporters, skipping debates, and not behaving like a serious candidate for governor.

Steve Poizner’s campaign has made this almost a daily drumbeat; “If Meg Whitman can't stand up to questions, how can she stand up for California?” read part of a state from Poizner senior advisor Kevin Spillane last week. And over at Calbuzz, Phil Trounstine and Jerry Roberts are “fuming” about Meg’s “ducking serious questions from California political writers for months.”

Expect more of the same today, when her GOP rivals -- Poizner and Tom Campbell--are scheduled to debate the measures on tomorrow’s special election ballot.

I have a bit of advice for the Meg bashers: Take a deep breath. And get a life.

Tom Campbell: Same Old Hooverism, Same Old Flaws

California's media likes to play up Tom Campbell as some sort of "moderate" or "sensible" Republican. As compared to Attila the Hun this might be plausible. But even a cursory glance at his alternative budget solutions shows that he is a typically conservative politician. Sure, his conservatism seems to be of the Ronald Reagan sort as opposed to the Grover Norquist sort. But there never was much difference between the two, except in tone, which is apparently all that matters to the media.

Campbell's proposed budget claims to want to solve a "systemic" crisis in a way that doesn't hurt our ability to recover from the economic crisis.

CA-Gov: Way-Too-Early-Field-Isn't-Even-Set Poll Coverage!

Two polls were actually released today on the 2010 California Governor's race.  The Field Poll did an extensive poll of the race, including favorability ratings, and Lake Research, a Democratic firm, did their own poll which included some head-to-head matchups.

Field's poll included Dianne Feinstein and I don't think the results were all that great for her.  In the primary she polls well under 50%, compared to earlier polls which had her closer to that number.

Dianne Feinstein: 38%
Jerry Brown: 16%
Antonio Villaraigosa: 16%
Gavin Newsom: 10%
John Garamendi: 4%
Steve Westly: 2%
Bill Lockyer: 1%
Jack O'Connell: 1%
Undecided: 12%

Considering she's the most well-known figure in California politics, and that there won't be that many competitors in the final field, that's not a runaway at all.

Ventura County's Foy eyes GOP gubernatorial bid

A Ventura County Supervisor and leader of a state anti-tax group is plotting a conservative challenge in the 2010 gubernatorial primary to deep-pocketed GOP moderates Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner.

In an interview, Peter Foy, state director for Americans for Prosperity, said the state party should have a strong conservative candidate and he may be just what it needs in the gubernatorial field.

"There's no question we need some leadership up in Sacramento," Foy said at Friday night reception hosted by the anti-tax group at the state Republican convention in Sacramento. "I am thinking about it.

Issa backs Whitman

Rep. Darrell Issa, the wealthy Southern California congressman whose money helped start the 2003 recall, has endorsed former eBay chief Meg Whitman in her bid for governor.

The endorsement is important not just for Issa's support, but because Issa, a strong conservative, has been eyed as a potential candidate himself by some hardliners in the party who fear the lack of a "true conservative" in the race.

Whitman, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former Rep. Tom Campbell all count themselves as social moderates.

"Meg Whitman is exactly the leader California needs to overcome its historic challenges," Issa said in a written statement. "She has created jobs and managed large organizations to prosperity. Today, as a result of her efforts, some 1.3 million people make part, if not all, of their living selling on eBay. I look forward to working with Meg as Governor to help create two million jobs and rebuild California's economy."

AM Alert: Taxes on the table, fundraisers across town

Details of what's under discussion in the budget talks are slowing trickling out.

To be clear, no deal has been struck and negotiations are continuing (and shifting). But Jim Sanders teased out at least some of the taxes on the table for today's Bee:

• Increasing the state's sales tax by 1 cent on the dollar.
• Increasing gasoline taxes by 12 cents per gallon.
• Raising the state's vehicle license fee from 0.65 percent of a vehicle's value to 1.15 percent, with 1 percent going to the general fund and local law enforcement getting 0.15 percent.
• Increasing the personal income tax across the board, either by assessing a surcharge on tax liability or increasing the tax rate.

Meg Whitman, EBay's former CEO, joins California governor's race

Former EBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman joined the race for governor of California on Monday, setting off a battle between Silicon Valley moguls for the 2010 Republican nomination.

Whitman, 52, has never run for public office but is banking on Californians' viewing her corporate background as just what the state needs to break its chronic cycle of fiscal disasters.

"California faces challenges unlike any other time in its history -- a weak and faltering economy, massive job losses and an exploding state budget deficit," she said in a written statement. "California is better than this, and I refuse to stand by and watch it fail.

Whitman boots up campaign for governor

Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman officially submitted her bid to explore a run for governor on Monday.

The move by the billionaire businesswoman sets up what's expected to be an expensive, 17-month auction between herself and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner in the 2010 Republican primary.

"California faces challenges unlike any other time in its history -- a weak and faltering economy, massive job losses, and an exploding state budget deficit. California is better than this, and I refuse to stand by and watch it fail," Whitman said in a prepared statement, announcing her exploration of a run for governor. "Now is the time for people across the state to join in a cause for change, excellence and a new California.
