Wash. Post notices one of the dozens of reasons to worry about CalPERS

The Washington Post joins the long list of responsible independent observers wondering if CalPERS knows what the hell it is doing. The bad news the Post offers residents of California: Some pension funds are also continuing to engage in other...

In Sacramento version of 'Spin Cycle,' the star spinner isn't a pol or an aide or a consultant. It's George Skelton.

In 1998, Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz put out "Spin Cycle," a superb dissection of how the Clinton White House attempted to manage the TV and print reporters covering the administration. In 2009, we have the Sacramento version...

Infrastructure is Not Pork

Despite the numerous statements from President Obama, the media hasn't yet really grasped the concept that spending is stimulus.  As the President said, "that's the whole point."

Yet, today we get the Washington Post passing off some press releases from a few anti-tax groups as original research and "news."

The compromise stimulus bill adopted by House and Senate negotiators this week is not free of spending that benefits specific communities, industries or groups, despite vows by President Obama that the legislation would be kept clear of pet projects, according to lawmakers, legislative aides and anti-tax groups.

The deal provides $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, for example, including money that could benefit a controversial proposal for a magnetic-levitation rail line between Disneyland, in California, and Las Vegas, a project favored by  Senate Majority Leader Harry M.

Wednesday Open Thread

Here we go on a busy day:

• California's Leon Panetta's confirmation finally got out of committee, and should be confirmed by the full Senate shortly.

• Some advice to the conference committee: IGNORE REP. JERRY LEWIS, who was appointed to the conference committee for the stimulus. The man is corrupt. On the other hand, I'm sure if you built a highway near his land, he might be willing to talk.

The Washington Post is reporting that Obama is considering Lloyd Dean, head of Catholic Healthcare West for the Health and Human Services gig.  (h/t CapAlert) Dean was a big Arnold fan during the so-called (and failed) "Year of Healthcare Reform.

Senate Proud To Sink California And The States

Both the Washington Post and the LA Times have stories today about the budget crises facing the states, where governors and legislatures have exhausted every gimmick and now must enact painful cuts that will work against the federal program to bring us out of the economic downturn.  The personal stories are significant:
Nevada resident Margaret Frye-Jackman, 71, was diagnosed in August with ovarian cancer. She had two rounds of chemotherapy at University Medical Center, the only public hospital in the Las Vegas area.

Soon after, she and her daughter heard the news on TV: The hospital's outpatient oncology services were closing because of state Medicaid cuts.

Solis nomination hearing postponed

A confirmation hearing for Rep. Hild Solis, a Los Angeles-area Democrat nominated as President Barack Obama's labor secretary, was postponed Thursday.

It's largely because of this report in USA Today detailing her husband's failure to pass business taxes.

More details in the Washington Post. (Hat tip: Capitol Weekly)

If Solis were not to be confirmed, there would be a ripple effect through L.A. politics and up to Sacramento.

Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, and Board of Equalization member Judy Chu, a Democrat, are already jockeying to replace Solis and are lining up factions of Los Angeles politicos.
