CA-32: Cedillo Masses a Volunteer Army In El Monte

The San Gabriel Valley is a unique area.  Within 5 minutes of Gil Cedillo's campaign kickoff for Congress yesterday in El Monte, I visited a 200 year-old Spanish mission, and a Pho shop in Alhambra where I was the only guy in there who didn't speak Cantonese.  This is a series of highly homogeneous communities, which doesn't have the same media, doesn't have the same leadership, and doesn't even speak the same language.

However, it's a demographic reality that the district is over 60% Latino while being about 18% Asian.  This is an urban, middle-class Hispanic district.  And while Gil Cedillo doesn't represent it in the State Senate, he drew a lot of support to his initial campaign event yesterday.

L.A. Rep. Hilda Solis says Becerra's replacement should be Latino

U.S. Rep. Hilda Solis (D-Los Angeles) says fellow Rep. Xavier Becerra's (D-Los Angeles) replacement for vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus should be Latino, if Becerra accepts a job in President-elect Barack Obama's Aministration.

“Given the record number of Latinos who voted this past November throughout the country, it is imperative that Latinos are represented at all levels of government including in the Democratic leadership," Solis said in a statement.

Potential California Obama appointments could lead to flurry of special elections

WASHINGTON - Before you know it, California could find itself with a handful of open congressional seats.

At least three Golden State Democrat congressmen - Xavier Becerra, Mike Thompson, and Mike Honda - are reportedly in the mix for cabinet positions in the Obama Administration, and any departures would set off a scramble for their seats, those involved in state politics say.

Should any vacancy occur, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger would have 14 days from the time of the opening to set a special election date.

Are Democrats in the house tonight? Are you ready to work? Ready to win? You say you're ready to work. But before any of us arrived here, men and women were already hard at work cleaning, fixing, improving. And when we leave, they will still be here, working and working.
