(From left to right) Cartoons by Mike Luckovich, Matt Wuerking and Nick AndersonWith so many cartoonists working independently at papers across the country, some are bound to come up with similar ideas and run with them, not knowing their colleagues across the country are doing the same thing. Darryl Cagle of MSNBC refers to these as "yahtzees," and the Reverend Wright controversy gave way to a couple of these this week.
First, the baptism analogy.
Matt Davies, the editorial cartoonist at the Journal-News, came up with this cartoon of Reverend Wright baptizing Barack Obama.
He was followed by this cartoon done by Mike Lester of the Rome News Tribune, and then this one by John Cole of the Scranton Times/Tribune.
Next, several cartoonists tackled the 'Jesus carrying the cross' metaphor.
First we have this cartoon filed by Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle.
Next, we have this cartoon by Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, followed by this cartoon done by Matt Wuerking of Politico.
And the New York Observer published this one by RJ Matson.
'Yahtzees' are just one of the many quirks of cartooning, like everyone drawing Dubya with giant ears, or sketching Bill Clinton with that 'come hither' look in his eyes.
Wait, I take that back. Both have those in real life.
