Cerveny behind anti-Coffman campaign?

Several sources have told the Inside Edge that Curt Cerveny, a political consultant based in Denver, may be one of the people behind an anti-Coffman campaign that some believe has been highly orchestrated.

Coffman is currently Colorado’s Secretary of State, but is running for US Congress to replace retiring Congressman Tom Tancredo.

Coffman has found himself under mounting scrutiny for actions his congressional campaign has taken and for actions taken while performing his function as SoS.

The Inside Edge previously wrote about how some of Coffman’s opposition may be personal in nature.

Cerveny’s opposition to Secretary of State Mike Coffman’s run for congress is, allegedly, personal, in that it, allegedly, stems from previous work he did for Coffman.

“Coffman apparently contracted with Cerveny to do direct mail work while running for Secretary of State and then fired [Cerveny] because he thought the work was too expensive,” said one source with knowledge of the particulars.

Since then, our sources tell us, Cerveny has allegedly told several people that he plans to “destroy” Coffman by working through surrogates to attack him.

“If that’s true,” said one political consultant contacted by the Inside Edge, “I think [Cerveny] can expect his career to suffer. I don’t know anyone who would want to work with him after violating a trust like that. It’s petty and immature in my opinion, if indeed it’s true.”

While political consultants don’t work under the same types of canons of ethics that lawyers and doctors are obliged to follow, our consulting source tell us that it’s considered highly improper amongst professional campaigners to display the type of spleen that Cerveny has allegedly spewed at Coffman.

“This is a business. You can’t make it personal if you expect to survive,” the consultant concluded.

Cerveny, while most often identified with Republicans candidates and causes has also worked for Democrats in the past, according to his website.
