UPDATED: COLORADO SPRINGS -- Bentley Rayburn tells PolitickerCO.com that he is the one saying in a YouTube video that the Republican primary in the 5th Congressional District "needs to be a two-man match."

Rayburn, who is one of three Republicans in the running, said he was "amazed" and "appalled" that someone recorded the conversation without his knowledge. Jeff Crank said he didn't record it and he doesn't know who did.

"I have no way of knowing whether it's authentic or not, so I can't comment," Crank told PolitickerCO.com.

Crank and Rayburn are challenging U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado Springs) and on the recording seem to be discussing the best way to take Lamborn's seat.

"If I am the weakest guy," Rayburn says in the recording, "I am not going to be the guy responsible for getting Doug Lamborn re-elected."

Rayburn said he has had several conversations with Crank since June, 2007, but had no way of knowing which specific one was recorded for the YouTube video.

Patrick Davis, a consultant for the Crank campaign, said no one at the campaign recorded the conversation nor do they know who put it up. But, Davis added that the campaign has been recording Rayburn at campaign events, just as Rayburn records Lamborn and Crank.

“Maybe Bentley Rayburn needs to keep in mind that he’s always on display,” Davis said.

Mike Hesse of the Rayburn campaign shot back that there’s a difference between a public forum and a private conversation.

“Why would you record that if you weren’t planning on using later?” he asked.

Hesse didn’t buy Davis’ denial of responsibility, saying he thought Patrick Davis knew who recorded the conversation.

Asked for comment, Lamborn spokesperson Catherine Mortensen said in a statement that, "We know nothing about it and frankly, it is irrelevant to our campaign."
