DCCC: Without help, Markey will run out of TV ad money by Thursday

FORT MORGAN--Fourth Congressional District Democratic nominee Betsy Markey will have to stop television advertising before the end of the week for lack of money, according to a fundraising letter sent out Monday by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

"If we don't act now, in just 72 hours, Betsy will no longer be able to afford television ads, just as national Republicans are moving in to help Congresswoman (Marilyn) Musgrave stay on the air," U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated in the fundraising letter.

Markey manager Anne Caprara said her campaign "will find out in the next three or four days" whether that prediction comes true.

"It's a day-to-day situation," Caprara said. "We look at the cash flow, we look at the money in and the money out and we're hoping that we can keep up with Marilyn on the spending."

"We knew that in order to go toe-to-toe with her on TV it's going to take a lot, and we were going to come to a point in the last 14 days or so when we're going to be starting to run out of money," Caprara added.

The full letter:

Dear Friend,

How would you like to defeat a Republican who has spent the past six years trying to write discrimination into our Constitution, privatize Social Security, and block affordable health care for millions of American children? We can do just that in Colorado's 4th District -- but only if we act in the next 72 hours.

Every two years, Republican Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave becomes more and more vulnerable. This year, we have our best chance to finally win this seat behind Democrat Betsy Markey. Recent polls indicate that Betsy has surged ahead, but the race is about to reach a tipping point.

If we don't act now, in just 72 hours, Betsy will no longer be able to afford television ads, just as national Republicans are moving in to help Congresswoman Musgrave stay on the air.

Please make an urgent contribution of $25, $50, or whatever you can afford to help Betsy Markey stay on the air and defeat one of the most extreme Republicans in Congress.

Congresswoman Musgrave has made it her sole mission to pass legislation that runs counter to our most cherished American values. She has been the lead sponsor in Congress of the Federal Marriage Amendment that would write discrimination against gay Americans into our Constitution. She is also a leading voice against bills to bar discrimination based on sexual orientation and fight hate crimes.

Betsy Markey's surge in the polls proves that voters in Colorado's 4th District are ready to fire Congresswoman Musgrave. Winning this district is also critical for Barack Obama's chances to win Colorado. However, this is all contingent on giving Betsy the resources she needs to stay in television in these final weeks.

Please make an urgent contribution of $25, $50, or whatever you can afford to help Betsy Markey stay on the air and defeat one of the most extreme Republicans in Congress.

I know times are tough, so I would not be asking for your help if this race wasn't critically important. The Republicans just secured a loan of $8 million to help fund a blitz of attack ads against outstanding Democrats such as Betsy Markey. Every dollar you give will go right to helping Betsy stay on television in this extremely expensive Denver media market.

Thank you for everything you have already done. Please keep Betsy on the air with a generous gift of $25, $50, or whatever you can afford in these final critical weeks and send the message that there is no place for bigotry or discrimination in our politics.

Onward to victory,

Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House

P.S. In 72 hours, Betsy Markey will no longer be able to afford television ads and we could miss a critical opportunity to defeat one of the most extreme Republicans in Congress. Please keep Betsy on the air with a generous gift of $25, $50, or whatever you can afford.
