Waak looks to consolidate gains made in Democratic landslide

DENVER--With Democratic victories in the presidential, U.S. Senate, and 4th Congressional District races, state Democratic Chair Pat Waak was visibly elated Tuesday night.

But she was also already thinking about how to consolidate her party's gains.

"I think the big challenge is: how do we keep all of these new voters that just got involved in the Democratic process?" Waak said, referring to record turnout in the state this year.

"(Colorado GOP Chair) Dick Wadhams likes to say everything goes in cycles -- well, let me tell you something. I think we should make this permanent," she said.

Waak said she's always on the lookout for promising potential Democratic candidates. Also, she said Democrats have a "responsibility to deliver on the things we promised to voters."

As for Markey, Waak said, "Oh, Betsy Markey is absolutely fabulous - that's a seat that we've been after forever."

Asked if this election was a high-water mark for the Colorado Democratic Party, Waak said, :It's a pretty high water mark, I have to say. As I said to somebody, how can you do more than this? You don't expect to sweep every single race, but..."
