Lamborn says he'll work on local issues, helping GOP regain congressional seats

U.S Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado Springs), now one of only two Republicans in Colorado's congressional delegation, said Tuesday he still thinks he can get things done despite working in a Democratic-controlled Congress along with a Democratic president.

"There will be plenty of opportunities to work for important initiatives that are for the good of Colorado," Lamborn said in a conference call Wednesday morning.

Lamborn said he'll work with Democrats on "things of local concern and regional concern" - offering the Leadville Tunnel crisis and the creation of a national veterans' cemetery as past examples of his work with Democrats.

Lamborn also said he would examine Barack Obama's tax plan and would support it if the tax cuts in it were "meaningful."

"If Barack Obama is serious about serious about meaningful tax cuts or spending cuts --both of which I would approve -- then I would be supportive of that, " he said.

With U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave losing on Tuesday to Democrat Betsy Markey, Lamborn is now the senior Republican in Colorado's congressional delegation. With the election of Democrats Mark Udall and Betsy Markey to the U.S. Senate and the 4th Congressional District seat, respectively, seven of Colorado's nine congressional delegation are Democrats.

Lamborn said Republicans "have to learn from mistakes that were made or losses that were  suffered.

"I will be working with Mike Coffman and others as well to make sure that we're recruiting good people, that we're raising money, that we're building infrastructure," Lamborn said. "We need to take a look at our strategy and make sure that we're focusing our resources as well as possible."

Lamborn said he thought Markey "is very vulnerable" in 2010 "because she is in a Republican-leaning district and there are candidates there who I think have a very solid shot at beating her in two years." Lamborn didn't specify which candidates he had in mind.
