Tell Bennet, Udall, NO on Clunkers!

( - promoted by Rocky Mountain Right - )

My e-mail to the senators:

Please vote against using my money to help someone trade a clunker for a new vehicle. The clunker bill is using Colorado taxpayers' money to pay off the UAW and to support Government Motors and other auto makers and dealer. This is wrong for America and for Colorado. Subsidizing the auto, home appliances, housing and other industries is not the way to stimulate the economy. Cut taxes. Thank you. Donald E. L. Johnson

Supreme Court nominee's quote sparks flap

As talk radio and the blogosphere blew up with claims that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is a racist, scholars of ethnicity and politics called for a quick truce.

A one-time poor choice of words on Sotomayor's part, perhaps, was their view. The New York appellate judge said in a 2001 speech, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

But Sotomayor's other, voluminous words — even in the same controversial speech — scream moderation, said academic experts who are following the debate.

Q&A;: Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee

Michael Steele, the recently elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, hasn't exactly had an easy first couple months on the job.

He drew criticism from prominent Republicans over his comments to a magazine that abortion is an "individual choice" before clarifying that he is a staunch foe of abortion. He called Rush Limbaugh's radio show "incendiary" and "ugly," which drew swift reaction from Limbaugh fans.

Steele, who spoke to Colorado Republicans in a packed hotel ballroom Friday night, even joked about his bumpy start as chairman, telling the crowd he's a guy who knows how to learn from his mistakes.

"You cannot please everyone," Steele said.

GOP tells youth to lead charge

New national Republican Party chairman Michael Steele urged Colorado Republicans on Friday night to stand up for their beliefs and told the youth of the party to take the reins of the GOP.

Speaking before a crowd of hundreds at an annual party fundraising dinner titled "Blueprint for Tomorrow," Steele said it has not been the party's ideals that caused the GOP to suffer losses across the country and particularly in Colorado the past several election cycles.

Rather, he said, it has been the party's failure to stick to its principles, which he defined as fiscal conservatism, family values and personal liberty.

Enviros want Obama’s Final Four to remain roadless

Environmentalists won’t allow President Obama to sit on the bench of sports escapism for even a minute without reminding him of his obligations to reject the Bush administration’s eight-year full-court press on America’s national forests.

In an ad campaign launched today to coincide with the first day of the NCAA’s Final Four basketball tournament – a tourney Obama playfully picked the winner of on ESPN Wednesday – the Pew Environment Group called on the president to uphold the hotly debated Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

“Jayhawks and cardinals play here. So do wildcats and wolverines. The road to the national championship? No, our national forests,” the television version intones.

Panel backs partner rights

A self-described "old lesbian" and three students urged lawmakers Monday to support a bill that would make it easier for gays and others to pass down property and handle emergency situations.

Supporters said the bill would apply to a man and a woman who lived together and weren't married or a grandparent and an adult grandchild, for example.

But critics, including Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud, called House Bill 1260 "marriage light" and said it was another attempt to give more benefits to gay couples.

"You call this an estate-planning tool, but it really strikes me as a marriage replacement," he said.

The measure allows those in a relationship to file beneficiary agreements with county clerks, a boon for those who can't afford lawyers for wills and other documents, such as power of attorney, said the sponsor, Sen.

Forget the noise, spend our tax dollars already!

Awash in the sound and fury of today’s anti-tax crusaders — the refusenik governors, the tea party attendees, the screamers of “socialism,” the Ayn Rand-loving libertarians “going Galt,” the op-ed writing de facto leaders of the Republican party, the just plain fools — you would think there was significant disagreement among the U.S. population on the big tax-spending stimulus package.

There’s not.

All of the racket generated in the days since this surprising piece was published by Republican pollster Frank Luntz at the end of January drowned out what polls have demonstrated: Americans agree the government should spend whopping amounts of tax dollars in order to get people working again and spending money in order to get more people working and spending money.

Take Aim At Foot! Fire!

We interrupt our normal coverage of Colorado politics to bring you an example of absolutely mind-blowing political stupidity too instructive to not point out. As Politico reports:
Nancy Pelosi said this week that she's keeping the door open for a second stimulus bill.

She may be the only one...reaction on Capitol Hill has been almost uniformly negative - and much of the blowback is coming from Democrats.

"If there's appetite, there's not in my office," said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.). "Enough for now. No mas. No mas."

"It is too soon," said House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.). "No sensible person is trying to guess what will be appropriate policy six months from now.
