No Climate Tax Pledge

Partial transcript:
Hello, I'm Senator Jim Inhofe from Oklahoma, and I am proud to be one of the hundreds of lawmakers on all levels of government to sign the Americans for Prosperity "No Climate Tax Pledge." This pledge states clearly that climate change legislation should not be used to fund a dramatic expansion in the size and scope of government. As I add my name to the list, I am also here to call on all those who oppose the largest tax increase in American history to join me in signing the pledge by going online to http://www.noclimatetax.com/.

I have worked tirelessly over the past ten years to expose cap-and-tax for what it really is: the largest tax increase in American history.

Dr. George Tiller & Right-Wing Terrorism

I'm going to try to make this as short as possible.  I have a lot to write on the subject, but at some point ranting for the sake of ranting takes away from some critical points.  First - the actual news report: a Kansas doctor, Dr. George Tiller, was assassinated while performing usher duties at his church Sunday.  The assassin was later identified as 51 year-old terrorist Scott Roeder, who was apprehended by Kansas City area law enforcement later in the day Sunday.

I don't normally do this, but I'm going to very deliberately point out the language I'm using: assassin and terrorist.

Q&A;: Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee

Michael Steele, the recently elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, hasn't exactly had an easy first couple months on the job.

He drew criticism from prominent Republicans over his comments to a magazine that abortion is an "individual choice" before clarifying that he is a staunch foe of abortion. He called Rush Limbaugh's radio show "incendiary" and "ugly," which drew swift reaction from Limbaugh fans.

Steele, who spoke to Colorado Republicans in a packed hotel ballroom Friday night, even joked about his bumpy start as chairman, telling the crowd he's a guy who knows how to learn from his mistakes.

"You cannot please everyone," Steele said.

New bankruptcy fight brews in Congress

(Photo/respres, Flickr)

Controversial last-minute changes to House legislation empowering bankruptcy judges to alter primary mortgages will do little to prevent struggling homeowners from trying to save their homes through bankruptcy, according to a number of housing advocates who are following the debate. Rather, pressures to limit the scope of a similar Senate bill, expected to be considered next week, pose a greater threat to the effectiveness of the bankruptcy provision, the advocates say.

The House proposal — which would eliminate the prohibition on judges to “cram down” the interest rates and principal balances of some primary home loans — was passed last week as part of a larger

Take Aim At Foot! Fire!

We interrupt our normal coverage of Colorado politics to bring you an example of absolutely mind-blowing political stupidity too instructive to not point out. As Politico reports:
Nancy Pelosi said this week that she's keeping the door open for a second stimulus bill.

She may be the only one...reaction on Capitol Hill has been almost uniformly negative - and much of the blowback is coming from Democrats.

"If there's appetite, there's not in my office," said Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.). "Enough for now. No mas. No mas."

"It is too soon," said House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.). "No sensible person is trying to guess what will be appropriate policy six months from now.

Hasan Stands Up To CPAC

We've had a lot of fun over the past year or so with former Republican statehouse candidate Muhammad Ali Hasan, who well and truly earned the title we bestowed on him of "Master of the Terrible Press."

Having been the punchline of so many jokes, it would be unfair of us to ignore what Hasan said recently at the Conservative Political Action Conference--as the Colorado Independent reports:

No shoes were thrown, but Ali Hasan did put his foot in his mouth last week at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., baffling the arch-conservative crowd with some decidedly moderate views.

"The problem with Republicans and the conservative movement right now," he said, according to Sarah Posner in the American Prospect, "is we've identified the wrong enemy.

Colo. delegation comments on Obama address

"Tonight President Obama delivered a sobering and honest assessment of our nation's economy. These are troubling times, but the President put forth a bold plan for rebuilding our economy and getting our country back on track."

Sen. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs

"Tonight, President Obama laid out a blueprint for America's future - a blueprint that will help create jobs, ease the flow of credit, keep American families in their homes, and invest in areas like energy, health care and education that will grow our economy. But it is also a blueprint that acknowledges our responsibility to future generations by reigning in runaway spending and crushing public debt.

Colorado officials respond to Obama’s not-quite State of the Union speech

Members of the Colorado delegation issued the following statements in response to President Barack Obama’s speech before Congress Tuesday night. They’ll be updated in the order they’re received.

Here’s the response from Rep. Jared Polis, a Boulder Democrat:

“Solving the many problems that face our nation—from the mortgage crisis to our nation’s outdated healthcare system—is a daunting task, but the innovation and ingenuity of the American people will see us through.

“As we heard in his speech tonight, President Obama is working to ensure that as we tackle the many challenges that lie ahead, Coloradans will get the most bang for our buck. He also laid out plans to rein in government spending, reduce our ballooning national debt, and ease our financial woes.
