GOP senators lift hold on Salazar's top aide

Two Republican U.S. senators agreed Wednesday to lift their procedural roadblocks and, hours later, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's right- hand man was confirmed by a unanimous Senate vote.

But the Republicans claimed victory, saying they had forced Salazar to reconsider his cancellation of oil and gas leases near national parks in Utah. The cancellation of the leases — issued during the last days of the Bush administration and which Salazar said were poorly considered — was the key motivation for Sens. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, to place a hold on the confirmation of Interior veteran David Hayes as deputy secretary of the department.

Defense lawyers respond: one of their own allegedly turned on clients

News that Frank Pignatelli, a Denver defense attorney, is seeing his law license suspended after allegedly revealing client information to law enforcement officials, drew a mix of outrage and skepticism throughout Colorado's criminal defense community today.

Jeralyn Merritt, a well known Denver attorney, wrote about the development on her popular blog, Talk Left, this morning. "Of all the states in the country, he had to pick mine. Goodbye, Mr. Pignatelli. Criminal defense lawyers work for their clients, not law enforcement. If he gets another license elsewhere, maybe he should apply for a job with the D.A.'s office. Or, better yet, stick to wills and estates.

The City of Aurora, Colorado’s third-largest, decides Monday night whether to offer insurance benefits to same-sex domestic partners of city employees.

The question could be contentious, as a budget deficit estimated from $6 million to $12 million has the city of 300,000 tightening belts at every turn. Some opponents say the roughly $50,000 annual cost to add the benefits is a luxury the city can’t afford. Others say the city can’t compete for employees without joining the 20 other municipalities across the state offering domestic partnership benefits.

The scene: December 2008. Governor Bill Ritter needs to pick a new U.S. Senator. At a large convention hall in Denver, he sits behind a folding table, greeting applicants as the very first "Colorado Open Senate Seat Job Fair" gets under way.

GOVERNOR’S AIDE: Sir. The applicants are ready.

RITTER: Bring the first one in.

SWANEE HUNT: Good morning Bill.

RITTER: Swanee! Long time no see. What brings you back to Denver?

HUNT: I want to be Senator.

RITTER: Of Colorado?

HUNT: Yes silly. That’s why I’m here.

RITTER: But you’re registered to vote in Massachusetts. You LIVE in Massachusetts.

HUNT: I still own a vacation home here.

RITTER: Swanee. No offense, but I’m not sure if you could relate to the average rural Coloradan.
