Supreme Court nominee's quote sparks flap

As talk radio and the blogosphere blew up with claims that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is a racist, scholars of ethnicity and politics called for a quick truce.

A one-time poor choice of words on Sotomayor's part, perhaps, was their view. The New York appellate judge said in a 2001 speech, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

But Sotomayor's other, voluminous words — even in the same controversial speech — scream moderation, said academic experts who are following the debate.

Hard work, Obama propel community organizer to HD-17 win

DENVER--The Colorado House Democratic Caucus on Thursday was all smiles and handshakes for incoming Democratic freshman legislators, but they reserved special praise for Dennis Apuan.

Apuan won state House District 17 in southeastern Colorado Springs by 381 votes over Republican opponent Kit Roupe last Tuesday; the only GOP-held state House seat to flip over to the Democrats this year.

PolitickerCO.com asked some Colorado political figures and pundits to predict who will win on Election Day. Here's what they said:

 

John Straayer, political science professor at Colorado State University:

President: Barack Obama (D) 52 percent; John McCain (R) 48 percent

U.S. Senate: Mark Udall (D) 54 percent; Bob Schaffer (R) 46 percent

Fourth Congressional District: Betsy Markey (D) 50.5 percent; Marilyn Musgrave (R) 49.5 percent

Bruce Likely To Pass Assembly, But Controversies Could Open Door For Primary Rival

State Rep. Douglas Bruce (R-Colorado Springs) will face his first electoral test Saturday, when he will run against two challengers for his House District 15 seat at the El Paso Republican County Assembly.

Bruce, the author of the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, will likely still enjoy significant support at the assembly against opponents Steven Hasbrouck and Air Force Major Mark Waller, said observers following the race.
